One of Batgirl’s two directors wants fans to hold off on their judgment until the film starts streaming on HBO Max. Just recently, the movie’s lead star Leslie Grace shared an image revealing our first look at the actress in character as the titular heroine. Many fans were stoked with the design while others took exception to the Batgirl costume. For those feeling wary, co-director Adil El Arbi has teased that you just need to wait to see what the Batgirl team has in store.
Taking to his Instagram Stories, Adil shared an image of the famous “Batman slapping Robin mid-sentence” meme. In this version of the meme, Robin is speaking about how the new costume looks like cosplay. He’s immediately smacked across the face by Batman who tells him, “STFU and wait for the film!”

Adil El Arbi is directing Batgirl alongside fellow Bad Boys for Life co-director Bilall Fallah. The script comes from Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, who also wrote the upcoming feature The Flash with Ezra Miller and Michael Keaton. Perhaps not by coincidence, Keaton will also be returning as his Batman in this new Batgirl movie as well. Along with Keaton and Grace as Barbara Gordon, the film also stars J. K. Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon and Brendan Fraser as the supervillain Firefly.
Leslie Grace Is Stoked for J. K. Simmons to Play Her Dad
Warner Bros.
Ahead of J. K. Simmons’ official casting as Jim Gordon in the film, Leslie Grace had spoken out about her desire to co-star with the veteran actor. As she previously pleaded through Entertainment Tonight, “I’m ready to learn a lot from J.K. Simmons. If you’re listening, huge respect and please play my dad! I hope you’re my dad.”
“She’s someone who’s been underestimated by even her own dad and being the youngest kid, sometimes you’re insulated from all of the tough stuff of life and she’s so eager to prove to herself and to everybody else that there’s some things that she can handle,” Grace added of her version of Barbara Gordon. “So, this journey is definitely going to show me a lot of that. I feel like I’m on an endless journey of proving to myself what barriers I can break, what limits I can break for myself and I’m excited to put a little bit of that eagerness and drive and, like, almost a bit of stubbornness into Barbara’s character.”
As of now, an official release date hasn’t yet been set for Batgirl. What we know is that the movie is being developed for a release exclusively for streaming on HBO Max. It is expected to debut sometime in 2022 with production currently underway. With a first look photo of Grace in the lead role now released, perhaps some footage or a teaser won’t be too far off, which will give fans a better look at Grace in the new Batgirl costume.
