There has been a lot of speculation about the upcoming slate of DCEU movies and how they all fit within the disjointed universe. Regarding Batgirl, it seems that even the directors don’t know exactly whether the movie sits right in the universe Warner Bros. have built around the characters of DC comics. So far, there is not a great amount of information available about the movie for fans to know one way or the other, but the film does feature J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, as well as Michael Keaton as Batman…and that just seems to make things even more confused.

Batgirl is currently heading to HBO Max sometime in 2023 and has also been slated to debut in theaters in the U.K. Directed by Ms. Marvel helmers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the pair are currently riding a wave of success from their Marvel stint and will be hoping for a similarly positive reaction to their DC offering. When it comes to how the movie will play out against other movies being released next year like The Flash or the upcoming Blue Beetle, the duo recently told The Direct that Batgirl is a mix of different parts of the DC Multiverse, and no one has explained to them what any of it means. They said:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Well you know, we’d sort of give the same answer, because we would also ask, ‘Oh, you have J.K. Simmons from the Snyderverse and we got Michael Keaton from the Burton-verse. What’s the situation there?’ And they would say, ‘Don’t worry about it. We got a plan.’ They never really explained that aspect to us, but I guess you’re gonna have to see the other movies to understand what happens, why the reason is that we ended up in sort of a spaghetti of Multiverses in that aspect. It’s gonna be a delicious spaghetti, I’m sure of that.”

Warner Bros. Have Been Moving Many Movie Release Dates

DC Films / Warner Bros. Pictures

As with Marvel Studios’ movies and TV shows, there is a lot of speculation around release dates versus where a project sits in the timeline of the specific universe. While Marvel has recently been moving around a few connected titles due to filming schedules, Warner Bros. did the same thing last year.

While there have been constant rumors that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Flash were moved out to 2023 due to issues with Amber Heard’s court case with Johnny Depp and Ezra Miller’s frequent brushes with the law, the official line still stands that the reason these movies were delayed is due to the time needed to complete various amounts of CGI work in the visual effects-heavy movies.

In contrast, although Black Adam was delayed for a few months to this October, Shazam! Fury of the Gods was pulled forward to this December, and with that movie seemingly being completed early this year, it was not surprising that the swap with Aquaman 2 was done. But where all this leaves Batgirl is unclear. The film has never been given an exact release date, and seems to be moving around based on where other films in the DCEU are being released. This links to what El Arbi and Fallah have said about the multiverse links of the movie, and how it will make sense when the bigger picture is revealed. We will apparently find out what it all means sometime next year.
