Batman: The Animated Series (1992) was arguably the most iconic TV show involving the Caped Crusader. So it was understandably sad when its run ended after 85 episodes in 1995. However, as was recently revealed at the Los Angeles Comic-Con by the actor Kevin Conroy (the iconic voice of Batman) and John Glover (The Riddler), an audio drama that picks up the series from where it ended is currently in the works. This audio drama will bring to life this iconic DC anti-hero in the podcast form.

Kevin Conroy, who many believe to be defining voice actor for Batman/Bruce Wayne, talked about this project during the “History of Batman” panel:

Alan Burnett was the original writer of the 1990s show, and he is one of the many voice actors who will be reprising their roles from Batman: The Animated Series. From what John Glover revealed about the project on the panel, the characters from the show will be returning in a more emotionally and psychologically evolved form than when they were last seen on TV.

It’s a great script by Alan Burnett and it brings back the original cast.

The “History of Batman” also featured Will Friedle, who played the next-gen batman Terry McGinnis in Batman Beyond.

The Riddler’s back, and he’s evolved in many ways … He understands he’s on the spectrum.

While details about the complete cast of this podcast are currently unknown, it is rather exciting to wonder who else will be reprising their roles. Batman: The Animated Series originally featured a roster of talented actors, ones who went on to raise their characters to legendary status in the process. An obvious example of this would be the retired Jedi Mark Hamill, who gave iconic status to the Joker’s laugh through his portrayal. Currently, the roster of surviving voice actors from the show (other than Hamill and Conroy) includes Paul Williams (The Penguin), Richard Moll (Two-Face), David Warner (Ra’s Al Ghul), Diane Pershing (Poison Ivy), Adrienne Barbeau (Catwoman), Ron Perlman (Clayface), Melissa Gilbert (Barbara Gordon) and Loren Lester (Dick Grayson / Nightwing).

Batman: The Animated Series is perhaps one of the greatest comic book television shows of all time, and even went on to win an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program in 1993. Seeing it return as a podcast would not be out of the ordinary, as the Caped Crusader has already made his way to the audio world. HBO Max has Batman: The Audio Adventures, starring Jeffrey Wright as Batman, and Spotify is currently working on Batman Unburied, a podcast project that has The Dark Knight screenwriter David S. Goyer at the helm.
