Following the cancelation of Batwoman at The CW, fans of the show took the news quite badly and immediately started a campaign to save the show and have the whole Batwoman series moved to HBO Max. This has included social media hashtags across multiple platforms and has even led to a group of fans renting out a billboard to get their point across. As well as attracting attention in the city, the billboard also caught the eye of Batwoman herself, Javicia Leslie, who took to her own Twitter account to acknowledge the fan response to the show’s cancelation.

Batwoman, along with Legends of Tomorrow, was surprisingly canceled by The CW despite both being strong performers and fan-favorites on the network. The series has gone through a number of changes since its debut, with the first season centering on Kate Kane, played by Ruby Rose, but following Rose’s departure from the show, the focus changed to the character of Ryan Wilder, who took over the Batwoman mantle following Kane’s disappearance. Since then Leslie has become popular with fans of the show, and that has very much become apparent since the announcement that there will be no more episodes coming to The CW.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

It is not the first time Leslie has spoken about her Batwoman fans and how strongly they feel for the character, especially when she first came into the role. Previously she told ComicBook.com:

“I think the fans surprised me the most, honestly. I’ve done other projects, but I think superhero fans are completely different. And this, specifically, is different because this hasn’t been done yet. So the fans are unique. They’re special. They’re hardcore because they feel represented. They’re ride or die. I remember when I first started this, I was scared, because I knew that we were entering a world that hadn’t really seen this yet, and I was worried that the original fans were going to be upset about the shift and the change. And don’t get me wrong, there were a few that were. But it was weird, because a lot stayed, and more came on. And then it became this beautiful mix where it wasn’t about race. It wasn’t about this, it wasn’t about that. It was just about this dope character, this badass character, this flawed character. You know? And to be a part of that has been so much fun.”

Could Warner Bros. Pull a Marvel/Disney Trick With Batwoman?

     The CW

There is currently a lot up in the air about both The CW and its shows. Earlier this year it was rumored that The CW was potentially being put up for sale by WarnerMedia and following the merger with Discovery there are clearly a lot of changes to come from that amalgamation. The cancelation of two DC shows at a time when Warner Bros. is attempting to expand their HBO Max content does seem very similar to what Marvel Studios did with their Netflix shows.

While Daredevil, Jessica Jones et al have now been added to Disney+, there is no way of telling if Warner Bros. will be planning to do the same with Batwoman and other Arrowverse shows, especially when they have just ordered several other DC series. It would certainly bolster their streaming content when competition between platforms is really becoming a battle to keep and grow subscribers.

All of that will obviously be resolved in time, but for now, Batwoman fans are not going to allow the series to slip away quietly into the dark and if the series does move to HBO Max, they will certainly count it as another fans vs. Warner Bros. victory.
