Actress Melissa Barrera, who you might recognize from her work in In the Heights and Scream (2022), has produced her first film. Entitled Bed Rest, it’s a recently released horror movie tackling the subject of pregnancy loss. Barrera discussed the film in an interview with Dread Central, who have also provided a complete description of the plot:

When asked about what attracted her to the film, Barrera said that it was the opportunity to work with Project X again. Project X is a global entertainment company that also worked on Scream (2022). They told Barrera that they had a script that they thought she’d be great for, and she said she’d look at it because she wanted to work with people that she knew and loved.

“After years of struggling to start a family, Julie Rivers (Barrera) is pregnant again and moving into a new home with her husband as they embrace a fresh start. Upon being ordered to mandatory bed rest, Julie begins to slowly unravel as she suffers through the monotony and anxiety of her new constraints. Soon, terrifying ghostly experiences in the home begin to close in on Julie, stirring up her past demons and causing others to question her mental stability. Trapped and forced to face her past, and the supernatural, Julie fights to protect herself and her unborn baby.”

“So they sent it to me, and then I read it in my trailer waiting between setups and I was weeping by the end. I was uncontrollably crying and I was thinking, “this is a thriller horror movie. I’ve never ever cried like with a genre movie before. Bed Rest feels different and special. And I thought if I can make people feel this when they’re watching the movie at the end, then I think it’s something that I, that’s worth doing. So that’s, that I was pretty much sold in that moment.”

Becoming A Producer

Project X also trusted Barrera enough to have her become a producing partner on the film. Barrera had realized a while ago that actors have little say in the final product of the project they work on, which became more and more difficult for her to accept. So she decided she wanted to have more of a say in the work she did.

Barrera has a lot of projects she’s been working on for both film and television. She couldn’t talk about any of them, but she said she thinks there should be some announcement either at the end of the year or the beginning of the next. One film we definitely know she’s going to be in is Scream VI, which will premiere in March. In the meantime, Bed Rest is currently available to watch on Tubi. Watch the trailer below.

“When this opportunity presented itself, and because I got involved so early on, I got to work on the script with Lori. They said, ‘we want you to be our partner.’ Since we have a close relationship as friends, they took me under their wing and they taught me everything. So it was also a very educational experience. Going on to my next projects that I’m producing, I feel very prepared.”
