Actor and comedian Ben Stiller is hesitant about returning for Dodgeball 2, according to Justin Long. Speaking with Comicbook.com, Long revealed that, while he would love to come back for more dodgeball action, Stiller is less sure about a sequel and has concerns it would never live up to the beloved 2004 original.

Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber and led by Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller, the first Dodgeball finds a group of misfits entering a Las Vegas dodgeball tournament in order to save their cherished local gym from a ruthless health fitness chain headed up by the hilariously arrogant White Goodman. Dodgeball is fondly considered one of the best modern comedic offerings by audiences, and no doubt a sequel would be a huge success. But would it really work without Ben Stiller’s White Goodman?

“Of course I would love to do it and I hope that it ends up happening, but I think Ben is a little, what he told me on that podcast was that he’s a little trepidatious about doing a sequel to something so beloved, something that people enjoy so much that. It’s very risky, you don’t wanna s–t on the original, you want something just as good. So I think he’s a little wary of that, of trying to recreate something that was very specific to that time, but I hope he comes around on it. Vince is a very convincing person, so I’m just hoping Vince can convince him with his idea. It’s a funny idea, I don’t wanna say what it is. I know Ben loves Dodgeball and loves that character. I remember how much fun he had playing it. He was always laughing. When we got together years later to do a little mini reunion for this charity and Ben put on the mustache again I remember him talking about how how happy it made him playing White Goodman again and how much fun that character was. I do know that Vince has a great idea for it and it’s just a matter of getting Ben on board.”

Vince Vaughn Has a ‘Great Idea’ for a Dodgeball Sequel

While the first Dodgeball wraps everything up nicely, Justin Long recently revealed that Vince Vaughn does have a “great idea” for a sequel nonetheless. “Vince wrote this movie, it’s like a parody of Christmas movies that I have coming out this December called Christmas with the Campbells; so I had just been around Vince a lot, and Vince had been telling me that he has this great idea for a sequel,” Long explained. “I don’t know if he had yet pitched it to Ben, but I kind of set up the pitch, I felt like I should facilitate the pitch.”

Sadly, we have absolutely no idea what this idea is or what Dodgeball 2 might involve, but this is not the first time that the subject of Dodgeball 2 has come up, with fans wondering if we would ever return to the exciting world and the sport of kings.

Someone who does not think a sequel will ever happen is Dodgeball director Rawson Marshall Thurber. “I really appreciate how much people love that movie. It’s near and dear to my heart, but I feel like I said everything I needed to say in one film,” the filmmaker said back in 2018. Of course, things change and you never can keep an underdog down.

While we await further news regarding Dodgeball 2, Justin Long can currently be seen running for his life in the critically acclaimed horror outing, Barbarian.
