Benedict Cumberbatch attended the unveiling ceremony of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, using the platform to pay tribute to his late sister, and show his support for Ukraine in their current conflict with Russia. Cumberbatch, who will soon be appearing in Marvel’s next movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, turned up for the event in a Dior suit and was joined by his wife Sophie Hunter as well as his Power of the Dog co-star, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Marvel boss Kevin Feige and director J.J. Abrams.

The event saw Cumberbatch praised by J.J. Abrams and Kevin Feige before taking the podium himself. Abrams said, “There are few actors who are innately talented and so convincing and so focused, dedicated and accomplished that just being on set with other actors make them better. There are few actors who can do that. It will surprise no one that Benedict Cumberbatch is one of those actors.”

Marvel’s Kevin Feige also spoke highly of the actor, saying, “There’s so many roles you’ve played, Benedict, that have made you worthy of this prestigious honor. You were an amazing Hamlet. You were an incredible Sherlock Holmes. You were the second best Khan ever. You were brilliant in all the iconic roles. But to us, and to millions around the globe, you deserve this honor for being the first, the best, the greatest, and the only Doctor Stephen Strange."

Benedict Cumberbatch Used His Ceremony to Share a Tribute To His Sister, and Highlight Events Happening In Ukraine

After being talked about by his peers, Cumberbatch took the podium and couldn’t let the occasion pass without paying tribute to his sister Tracy Peacock, who passed away after a battle with cancer last year. Cumberbatch said:

He went on to take a moment to reflect on world events, specifically those happening in Ukraine. With life going on in many other countries around the world, it was a reminder that there are always bigger things happening in the world. He said:

“I want to mention my sister who we lost last year. She would have loved this. She was unbelievably loyal, supportive, and she would have loved the glitz and the oddness and the glamour. She would have just been laughing nonstop all the way through, and probably crying. I hope somewhere up there, where the real stars shine, you’re looking down on this moment now. I’m sure you are. We miss you so much. You remain such a good and wonderful person to have had in our lives.”

Cumberbatch is currently preparing to start promotion for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in the coming months as we head towards the movie’s arrival on May 6th.

“I can’t speak today at this amazing moment in my life, on this extraordinary platform, without acknowledging the obvious of what’s happening in the Ukraine and to show my support for the people of Ukraine, my support for the people of Russia who are opposing the Kleptocracy and the idiocy of their rulers to try and halt the progression of this atrocity.”
