Keeping plot secrets under wraps has become a staple of the later Marvel films as their ever-expanding universe begins to draw in Sony and Twentieth Century Fox properties. And it is one of Benedict Cumberbatch’s co-stars in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tom Holland, who has become synonymous with dropping spoilers for Marvel projects.

However, the pair managed to keep one of the worst secrets of modern cinema that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would be appearing in that film. Now, the lens is turned firmly on Cumberbatch alone as his character prepares for his second eponymous outing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

With the film’s premiere just around the corner, Cumberbatch is out doing the rounds to drum up publicity. He’s having something of a hard time of it, though without being allowed to talk about the actual movie, characters or any plot details, as played out hilariously when he recently appeared on Jimmy Fallon.

The sequel is set to continue a recent trend of MCU movies that buck the traditional tone and format of the series, allowing directors to apply their signature mark. The result is a series that has perhaps less cohesion when viewed as a whole but produces stronger standalone movies.

Multiverse of Madness Will Have Many Surprises

There’s also been rumors and expectations that more tinkering in the multiverse could finally fold the X-Men and possibly The Fantastic Four into the MCU. The X-Men have been teased already, most notably, and mild SPOILER alert here, with Evan Peters appearing in WandaVision.

Patrick Stewart has also effectively confirmed he will be reprising his role as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so the door is open for more cameos. Marvel has also already confirmed a Fantastic Four project is in the works back in 2019, with no further details announced since it’s prime time for fans to get some more news on that.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is sure to throw up a few surprises, so it’s understandable Marvel wants to keep things tight-lipped to provide the best experience for fans. Cumberbatch proves his comedic chops during his Fallon interview as he says in his own words “I’m basically here, to talk about a movie I can’t talk about.”

The pair riff for a few minutes on non-specific topics like the movie is coming out, and it’ll be available in IMAX. Cumberbatch also jests about a surprise cameo from Tom Cruise, before pretending to play the role of Fallon’s arms in the chat show’s usual fare.

They do at least preface the conversation by discussing Cumberbatch’s recent Academy Award nomination for best actor for his role in The Power of the Dog.

Fans won’t have long to wait to find out what the latest MCU offering has in store. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set for a worldwide premiere on May 6th.
