Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Four is progressing faster than any of its predecessors. The combination of MCU’s theatrical releases and the slate of shows exclusively created for Disney+ have expanded the franchise’s stories sharing the same continuity, and has allowed for far more characters in the universe than there ever had been. While on the one hand, we are getting sequels like Spider-Man: No Way HomeDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and upcoming The Marvels, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, etc., there are origin stories like Shang-Chiand the Legend of Ten Rings, Eternals, and anticipated entry Fantastic Four. Up until now, the new MCU Phase Four has seen five films and four Disney+ originals released, which debuted several new faces while leaving crumbs for several future installments.

However, up until now, there is one character who has remained persistent in Phase Four, and that is the new Sorcerer Supreme Wong. Wong, who made a surprise appearance in Shang-Chi, recruited the titular character and also Tim Roth’s Emil Blonsky/Abomination. Then in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Wong seemed to be doing some round the multiverse work, resembling Nick Fury’s character role in the earlier phases of the franchise. Now, he’ll play a significant role in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. Owing to his cross-films appearances, actor Benedict Wong who essays the character in the MCU has an interesting name change for Phase Four.
Speaking to Empire Magazine (via Slash Film), Wong, revealing his own name for Phase Four, said,
What’s Next for Benedict Wong?
Wong’s character is growing in terms of importance and his role would have a greater impact in the next Doctor Strange film, in which Strange would have to deal with the ramifications of the multiversal collision of universes. Given Wong’s recruiting tasks in Phase Four, it seems there’s something a lot bigger going on and the man knows something. It seems he’s keeping tabs on this newly-gathered information with the minds and experience of Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers, meaning we might see a team-up sometime soon. In fact, in a new image tease, it seems that it would be Wong who gets Strange and America Chavez together for their fight against the enemy in the upcoming secretive film.
From what it looks like, Wong can have a far more extensive role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness than just being Strange’s sidekick. Furthermore, given Wong’s recent surveillance on mystical beings, elements, and phenomena happening around, Wong can be the one who’ll somehow unite characters like Moon Knight, Werewolf by Knight, and many more who can form the next set of Avengers against another major adversary.
Though Benedict Wong’s appearance in the MCU beyond Doctor Strange 2 is currently unknown, his character, via a continuing run of appearances, can potentially fill in for the person of contact for a new team of superheroes, who happens to be a sorcerer.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness releases May 6, 2022.
