Australia is an epic romantic adventure set in pre-World War I Australia, that follows the strong-minded Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman), an Englishwoman who inherits an Australian ranch. She reluctantly hires Drover (Hugh Jackman) to assist her in driving the cattle over rough terrain to supply the army. Strictly Ballroom marks Luhrmann’s directorial debut and is based on a stage play written by Luhrmann during his studies at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts. The stage play was critically acclaimed and had great success at Sydney’s Wharf Theatre, where Australian music executive Ted Albert saw it and fell in love with it. Later on, when Albert started M&A productions, he proposed the idea to Luhrmann to adapt his play for the big screen. Luhrmann accepted the offer on the condition that he could direct the film. Costume designer Angus Strathie brought Luhrmann’s visions to life, and the dramatic showy pieces would foreshadow all of Luhrmann’s later works.

Luhrmann’s wife Catherine Martin was co-designer with Angus Strathie. Martin spoke about her experience with the film in a recent interview with Vogue Magazine, stating " Baz was trying to reinvent the modern movie musical, and flying in the face of all studio conventions.
