Comedians are often the heart and soul of Hollywood, their improvisational skills unmatched and talent at making people laugh both lucrative and deeply appreciated. Despite bringing happiness and joy to the masses, there is a stigma around comedians that most are actually depressed and unhappy behind closed-doors; this has even been called ’the sad clown paradox.’ While this theory is by no means universal, the funny men and women of cinema are generally upfront about their own demons and struggles. Perhaps that’s why they seemingly gain so much joy from the delight of others.
While many funny actors enjoy staying in their proverbial lanes and killing it at comedy, there are quite a few who embrace their multi-faceted nature and relish challenges. Many of comedy’s biggest heavyweights have taken on dramatic roles and received critical acclaim in doing so. These are the best dramatic movies from funny comedians, in no particular order.
