Gremlins is a 1984 comedy-horror set at Christmas time. It tells the story of an entrepreneurial salesman (Randall Peltzer) that visits Chinatown to find a unique gift for his son Billy (Zach Galligan). On his outing, he finds a strange creature called Mogwai, however, the shopkeeper is reluctant to sell it to him. The shopkeeper’s grandson eventually sells the Mogwai to Peltzer on the condition that he never exposes him to bright light or water, and never feeds him after midnight. Billy becomes enamored with the creature and names him Gizmo. He is cautious in following the rules, but, one day a family friend accidentally spills water on Gizmo, and the creature multiplies. The new mogwai all have different personalities. One with a particularly devious streak named ‘Stripe’ fools Billy into feeding the new mogwai babies after midnight. Shortly thereafter the mogwai (aside from Gizmo) transform into dangerous bloodthirsty creatures. Billy enlists the help of his crush Kate Beringer (Phoebe Cates) to try and save the town of Kingston Falls from annihilation. Gremlin’s 2: The New Batch was released 6 years later in 1990 and is set in a New York high rise. The films also inspired an upcoming series titled Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, which is slated for release on HBO Max in 2022. Here are the eight best moments from the Gremlins film series, ranked.

In an original scene in Gremlins 2: The New Batch, the dialogue of the movie starts to become distorted, and the film begins to burn out as though there is an issue with the film reel. Afterward, a blank white screen appears and soon viewers see silhouettes of several gremlins playing hand puppets on the screen. Eventually, viewers are re-introduced to the movie.

7 Gizmo’s Introduction (Gremlins)

When Randall Peltzer brings home the mogwai for Billy, we see our first glimpse of the adorable Gizmo, (think the 1984 version of Baby Yoda). The Peltzer family is captivated by the charming Gizmo. Even Barney (the Peltzer family dog) can’t resist saying hello with a smooch. The scene is also touching as the bond between Gizmo and Billy is clear from the start.

6 Gizmo Gets Wet (Gremlines)

Billy introduces Gizmo to his young friend Pete Fountaine (Cory Feldman). In his excitement to see the Mogwai, he accidentally spills a jar of water on him. To the viewers’ surprise Gizmo begins to spasm, while little fur balls pop off of him in every direction. The furballs are new Mogwai, each with its specific personality. The first one to emerge has a stripe of white fur on the top of his head and is aptly named “Stripe”.

5 Mrs. Deagles Stairlift Malfunction (Gremlins)

Mrs. Deagle is the secondary antagonist of the original Gremlins. Mrs. Deagle was a cold-hearted, nasty old woman who wanted nothing more than the destruction of Barney. One night while the gremlins were out doing some Christmas caroling, Stripe tampers with the wiring on Mrs. Deagle’s stairlift. When she tries to make a quick getaway from the ghastly monsters singing at her front door she meets her end by getting shot out of her top floor window on a high-speed stairlift ride. The audience last sees her upside down in the snow still attached to the lift. Some would conclude Mrs. Deagle got her just desserts.

4 Gizmo Makes a Stand Against Stripe (Gremlins)

Gizmo to the Rescue! In a bid to save his newfound friends, Gizmo zooms through the department center after Stripe in a pink toy car. Gizmo’s mission is to open the blinds and expose Stripe to the sunlight before he can reach the store fountain and multiply.

3 The Kitchen Scene (Gremlins)

     Warner Bros.

After Lynn Peltzer (Francis Lee McCain) discovers the newly hatched creatures in her kitchen, she must defend herself against the violent beings using anything at her disposal. She wields her kitchen knife with brutal precision, but also utilizes household appliances such as the blender and microwave in her fight for survival. The gruesome deaths leave quite the mess in her kitchen!

2 Gizmo Saves Kate and Marla from Spider Gremlin (Gremlins)

Kate and Marla (Haviland Morris) become trapped in a tunnel of webs by a gigantic and terrifying Spider Gremlin. Just when viewers think there is no hope for the pair, Gizmo breaks through a vent resembling Rambo. Gizmo then proceeds to set an arrow ablaze and take aim on the arachnid, lighting the beast on fire and saving his friends.

1 Attack of the Christmas Tree (Gremlins)

After battling off several Gremlins in the iconic kitchen scene, Lynn Peltzer is attacked by a Gremlin hiding in the family Christmas Tree. The creepiness factor is especially heightened when the audience makes out two glowing red eyes camouflaged amongst the Christmas lights. The tree topples over on top of Lynn while she battles back with 2 large kitchen knives. The fight is especially brutal, and ends up with Billy rescuing his mother in the nick of time.
