Christmas with the Campbells

Barbarian star Justin Long and American Dreams and Pitch Perfect breakout Brittany Snow teamed up for the romantic holiday film Christmas with the Campbells, in which they portray two people who fall in love during the festive season under strange and unlikely circumstances.

When Jesse (Snow) gets her heart broken by her boyfriend Shawn (Saturday Night Live’s Alex Moffat) right before Christmas, the young woman is devastated yet reluctantly agrees to spend the holiday with his caring parents and handsome cousin (Long); naturally sparks fly between the two. The feel-good flick is the perfect way to embrace the holiday season and is a must for fans of the romance genre.

The Apology

     Shudder

Breaking Bad alum Anna Gunn delivers a powerful performance as a recovering alcoholic struggling with past trauma in the pulse-pounding thriller The Apology, which follows her character Darlene Hagen as she prepares to host her family’s Christmas celebration with her best friend Gretchen (Janeane Garofalo).

Darlene has been plagued by the disappearance of her daughter for 20 years, and when her estranged former brother-in-law Jack arrives for the holiday, she finds herself questioning her relationships and own sanity. The Christmas-themed mystery is just one of many highly-anticipated projects Gunn has in the works, as she is set to appear in the upcoming Apple TV+ series Sugar alongside Colin Farrell.

Christmas Bloody Christmas

Fans of horror and the holiday season are in for quite the treat with the spine-tingling flick Christmas Bloody Christmas, a Shudder original that will also be landing at AMC+ in December. The zany and gory film depicts the terrifying killing spree a robotic Santa Claus goes on during a snowy winter night, as old Saint Nick makes it his mission to destroy anything in his path.

It’s up to a record store owner (Riley Dandy) who is just looking for a good time to take on the ruthless robot, resulting in an epic Christmas showdown. Christmas Bloody Christmas was written and directed by Joe Begos, who previously earned acclaim for his equally unique horror hits Bliss and VFW.

Burial

     IFC Midnight

Charlotte Vega stars as a fearless intelligence officer on a high-profile mission during World War II in the mystery thriller Burial, which follows a group of resilient Russian soldiers tasked with delivering the remains of Hitler back to their country; when the small unit is ambushed by Nazi Wehrwolf fighters, it’s up to the Allied soldiers to get the high-stakes cargo back to Stalin and Russia.

The action-filled movie also stars Harry Potter fan-favorite Tom Felton, and fared decently with critics, earning praise for its unique premise and performances. In their review, The Los Angeles Times called it “brutal and exceedingly bloody,” and that it “is packed with meaty philosophical questions about gods, monsters, and men at war, and it’s exceedingly well-executed.”

Saving Christmas Spirit

     Nicely Entertainment

Another cozy holiday film making its way to the platform is the romantic dramedy Saving Christmas Spirit, in which brilliant archeology professor Lucy Stewart (Ashley Newrough) decides to spend her holiday season in the Scottish Highlands to search for a hallowed ancient shrine.

On her exciting journey, Lucy finds her passion for both history and Christmas renewed as she also finds herself falling for a charismatic local (James Robinson) who is guiding her in her quest.
