Hulu’s cinematic and televisual offerings so far this year have been many and varied. They have included Sarah Adina Smith’s dark comedy The Drop starring Primetime Emmy nominee Anna Konkle and Coming 2 America star Jermaine Fowler, and the first episodes of the delightfully batty Australian animated comedy Koala Man, in which America no longer exists and the Queen of Australia turns out to be Nicole Kidman, featuring voice work by Michael Cusack and Hugh Jackman (and Nicole Kidman!).

As always, February promises another clutch of new, exciting releases. Here’s the pick of the movies coming to Hulu this month.

I’m Totally Fine (Feb 2.)

     DECAL Releasing

This quirky sci-fi gem stars Jillian Bell (Brittany Runs A Marathon, Bill & Ted Face the Music), Blake Anderson (Woke, The Freak Brothers), and Natalie Morales (Parks and Recreation, Santa Clarita Diet). At base a movie about grief and loss, it follows the story of Vanessa (Bell), whose lifelong best friend and business partner (Morales) unexpectedly passes away due to an undiagnosed medical condition. Vanessa is devastated by the tragedy, but in order to help her get over the loss, she resolves to go to the location where the pair were due to throw a launch party for their new product. While there, she meets her dead friend. Or rather, an extraterrestrial who looks exactly like her. Vanessa knows it isn’t really her friend, but does she care?

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

It’s an innovative and unusual take on familiar dramatic tropes and benefits from nuanced performances from Bell and Morales. It is helmed by television and music video director Brandon Dermer in his directorial debut. I’m Totally Fine will be available on February 2.

Piggy (Feb. 9)

     Filmax

This Spanish-language horror flick mixes elements of crime thriller, black comedy, and grindhouse, and has been wowing critics and has bagged a raft of awards at European film festivals. It tells the story of Sara, an overweight teenage girl living in a town in rural Spain who is being bullied by three other girls. One day, her tormentors disappear, and Sara discovers they have been kidnapped by an unknown assailant, who seemingly has her best interests in mind.

Piggy asks difficult questions about adolescence, justice, and the nature of retribution, and stars Laura Galán as Sara, and the star of Netflix’s Spanish-language drama Élite, Claudia Salas. It will be available on Hulu starting February 9.

Bruiser (Feb. 24)

     Hulu

This Hulu original is directed by debut film director Miles Warren and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last September to positive reviews. Starring Trevante Rhodes (Bird Box, The United States vs. Billie Holiday), it tells the story of Darious (played by the star of Till Jalyn Hall), a teenager who struggles with distant parents and bullying at school until he meets a stranger who agrees to show him how to defend himself. Filled with twists and turns, Bruiser benefits from an excellent, understated performance by the 16-year-old Hall.

Spin Me Round (Feb. 24)

     IFC FilmsAMC+

This dark comedy stars Alison Brie (The Disaster Artist, The Rental) and Alessandro Nivola (Selma, The Red Sea Diving Resort) in the lead roles, and premiered at South by Southwest last year. Brie is Amber, the proprietor of a restaurant in California who wins the chance to visit Italy, where a corporate immersion program is being held by the franchise’s owners in the romantic city of Pisa. So far, so good, except Amber’s callowness and sheltered life does not equip her for the twists and turns of life in Italy, where the immersion program turns out to be something altogether different from what she was expecting. Is she being groomed for greater things in the company, or for far murkier and immoral reasons?

Directed by Jeff Baena, the film also features Baena’s wife and long-time collaborator, Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation, The White Lotus) and Fred Armisen (All Together Now, How It Ends). Spin Me Round drops on February 24.

The Reef: Stalked (Feb. 24)

     RLJE FilmsShudder

It’s humans versus sharks in this Australian horror film, which premiered last July. A spiritual sequel to the 2010 breakout hit The Reef, the movie stars Neighbours alumna Teressa Liane as one of a group of friends who go spear fishing in kayaks, only to find themselves being stalked by a great white shark. As the group finds themselves getting deeper and deeper into trouble, they begin to question their actions in light of a past tragedy.

Also starring Ann Truong (Cowboy Bebop), horror film veteran Kate Lister (Fox Trap), and Saskia Archer in her full-length feature debut, The Reef: Stalked promises mortal peril in beautiful surroundings, and lean direction from Andrew Traucki in his first film since Black Water: Abyss. The film drops on February 24.
