Hellraiser

     Hulu

A reboot of the Clive Baker horror staple of the same name, the upcoming supernatural film Hellraiser centers on a woman battling addiction who stumbles upon a dark and mystical puzzle box that has the ability to call upon ancient and nefarious demonic creatures. Jamie Clayton takes on the iconic role of Pinhead, the main leader of the evil Cenobites who wreaks havoc on heroine Riley and those closest to her.

When discussing casting a woman as the villain and the latest installment of the franchise, director David Bruckner revealed to Entertainment Weekly, “This is not a remake. I just didn’t think you could ever remake the original Hellraiser…We felt a kind of anticipation around the fans to reimagine the character. We knew we wanted Pinhead to be a woman. Jamie was just the right person for the role.”

All My Puny Sorrows

     Mongrel Media

Adapted from the Miriam Toews’ novel of the same name, the 2021 Canadian drama All My Puny Sorrows features Sarah Gadon and Alison Pill as Yolandi and Eflrieda Von Riesen, two kind but vastly different sisters who decide to openly question and reevaluate their lives and walk away from their Mennonite faith. The film focuses on a flashback-filled week when one sister visits the other in hospital.

Chronicling the siblings’ tumultuous upbringing and relationship within the conservative community and one another, the poignant picture delves into heavy topics like suicide, spirituality and family dynamics while shining a profound light on depression. All My Puny Sorrows had its worldwide premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival where it earned rave reviews for Gadon and Pill’s powerful performances.

Rosaline

A charming spin on the Shakespeare beloved classic Romeo and Juliet, the upcoming romantic comedy Rosaline stars Kaitlyn Dever as the titular character (and also Juliet’s cousin), who fell head-over-heels for Romeo before he ultimately went on to pursue his equally ill-fated lover. Rosaline decides instead of accepting their romance she will do anything necessary to foil it, so she concocts schemes and ploys in order to reclaim the object of her affection.

Based on the Rebecca Serle young adult novel, the entertaining rom-com offers a unique perspective on the star-crossed lovers’ tragic story from a young woman scorned, with director Karen Maine calling Rosaline’s character, “fearless, bucks tradition, and is unafraid to throw caution to the wind in order to get what she wants — or, at least, what she thinks she wants.”

Crimes of the Future

     MiramaxMK2/Mile End

The always brilliant and innovative David Cronenberg directed the 2022 sci-fi body horror drama Crimes of the Future, a critically lauded picture that marked a triumphant return to the gripping genres since his 1999 hit eXistenZ. Touting a dazzling cast led by Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart, the intriguing film follows celebrity performance artists Saul and Caprice, a duo who showcases the wondrous metamorphosis of the former’s body and organs in a futuristic world where human evolution has vastly accelerated within select people. The sci-fi horror flick went on to compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, where it caused some people to walk out due to its gory and graphic nature, and its brilliantly inexplicable content.

Grimcutty

The spine-tingling creature feature Grimcutty will introduce audiences everywhere to the terrifying eponymous monster, a chilling internet meme that causes hysteria among parents in a small town when they begin to suspect their children are harming themselves due to its mysterious presence. When teenager Asha becomes targeted by the deadly creature, her parents believe she is acting out and panic, which ultimately gives Grimcutty its power; it is brought to life because of the adults’ fear and concern for their kids. It is up to Asha and her little brother Kamran to put a stop to the dangerous meme that is threatening the lives of their fellow youth.

Ghostbusters

     Columbia Pictures

The iconic 1986 supernatural comedy Ghostbusters features some of Hollywood’s most hilarious performers including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, and tells the entertaining story of three offbeat parapsychologists who after experiencing a paranormal encounter at the New York Public Library create their own ghost-hunting business.

Conceived by both Aykroyd and Ramis, the cherished ’80s movie staple was inspired by the Aykroyd’s fascination with the paranormal, as his mother claimed to see ghosts, his father wrote a book about spirits and his grandfather experimented with various radios to contact the dead. Ghostbusters is a Halloween-favorite and is celebrated for its brilliant blend of horror, humor and action.

Wyrm

     Vertical Entertainment

Christopher Winterbauer’s quirky 2021 comedy Wyrm takes place in an alternate reality in the mid-90s and centers on the eccentric Whitner family as they attempt to cope with the loss of their oldest son Dylan. The heartfelt flick follows awkward twins Myrcella and Wyrm as they are forced to pass the Level One sexuality requirement that involves them having to wear electronic collars until they each receive their first kiss.

The zany coming-of-age comedy was praised for its embarrassingly relatable humor, endearing performances, and overall message, with Celluloid Dreams writing, “A deliberately cringe-y comedy that’s also deeply empathetic, heartfelt and sweet–like “Eighth Grade” directed by Wes Anderson–and an indie gem worth seeking out.”

Matriarch

The 2022 folk horror movie Matriarch depicts the inner struggles of the burn-out career woman Laura Birch who, after surviving a nearly deadly overdose, decides to return to her childhood home in a quiet English village to sort through her overwhelming feelings and issues. When she arrives at the secluded spot, Laura discovers that the village’s inhabitants harbor a dark and deadly secret that directly ties to not only her mother but herself. The Ben Steiner directed slow-burn picture stars Jemima Rooper and Kate Dickie as the disturbed mother and daughter whose destinies are revealed in terrifying fashion, and will arrive on Hulu just in time for spooky season.

Antlers

     TSG Entertainment

Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons headline the 2021 supernatural horror film Antlers, an adaptation of the Nick Antosca short story that follows teacher Julia Meadows as she begins to wonder if one of her troubled students is being abused at home after witnessing his bizarre behavior and chilling drawings. Unbeknownst to Julia, 12-year-old Lucas is actually concealing a malevolent demonic presence in his home that has legendary folklore roots in the secluded Oregon town.

Antlers was directed by Scott Cooper and produced by revered horror maven Guillermo del Toro, and Detroit News wrote that it has “no problems exploring the outward thrillsof horror films- the gotchas, the jump scares, the things that go bump in the night-but it knows the real horror comes from within.”
