Tony Gilroy has been a pioneer in screenwriting for many years. He has produced films that have grossed multi-millions at the box office worldwide. His career has spanned across several genres including action, drama, and science fiction. Most notably, Gilroy introduced us to the highly successful Bourne franchise, beginning with The Bourney Identity. This led to several more films, and Gilroy himself went on to direct The Bourne Legacy.

Gilroy was born in Manhattan, New York City to a show business family. His mother was a talented artist and writer, and his father was an award-winning playwright, producer, and filmmaker. He began his career in 1992 when he sold his screenplay, A Cutting Edge. From there, Gilroy continued to write hit films, including Armageddon and, currently, Andor on Disney+ (which interestingly is influenced by the Bourne movies). There is no question that Gilroy has proved himself to be a leading force in Hollywood. Let’s take a look at the movies he has written, ranked.

8 Armageddon

     Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

There is no doubt that Armageddon comes with a lot of criticism. It has been considered corny by many, and there are too many scientific inaccuracies to speak of. With that said, it is a solid popcorn flick that is still watched to this day. Bruce Willis leads a cast of hilarious and interesting characters. Gilroy certainly hit the mark when it came to writing a big-budget science fiction film. It follows the classic structure of cinema, with comedy, romance, and drama throughout.

7 Extreme Measures

     Sony Pictures Releasing

Extreme Measures was one of Gilroy’s earliest screenplays, focusing on a young doctor (Hugh Grant) who challenges the motives of his mentor, played by Gene Hackman. Gilroy adapted a thought-provoking story effectively, conveying the complicated characters and keeping the audience engaged from beginning to end. Hackman and Grant brought the characters to life, and they are led by Gilroy’s dialogue. Diving into the complicated world of medicine is no easy feat for a writer, but Gilroy nonetheless brought gravitas to the narrative and characters.

6 The Devil’s Advocate

     Warner Bros.

Gilroy wrote the classic supernatural drama, The Devil’s Advocate, featuring a powerhouse performance from Al Pacino. The story follows a young lawyer (Keanu Reeves) who begins to realize that he is working for the Devil (Pacino). It is a very interesting look into the world of power and greed. The movie balances the real-world drama and the supernatural, thanks to Gilroy’s incisive screenplay. Reeves and Pacino work very well off each other, and they bring Gilroy’s dialogue to life. Gilroy proved, once again, that he can certainly adapt a novel to the big screen.

5 The Bourne Identity

     Universal Pictures

Gilroy adapted The Bourne Identity from the novel of the same name back in 2002. The film went on to launch one of the most successful action franchises of all time. Gilroy’s writing perfectly captured the thrills and intrigue in the world of espionage, and Matt Damon was the perfect choice for Jason Bourne. The film was gritty, honest, and, at the same time, heart-breaking. The story has many puzzles, twists, and turns that the audience experiences along with the characters.

4 Dolores Claiborne

     Columbia Pictures

Gilroy wrote the screenplay for Dolores Claiborne based upon the Stephen King novel of the same name. It is an intriguing dramatic story that is brought to life through the performances of Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Gilroy shows us his capabilities as a dramatic writer through these two characters. It is a story that focuses on corruption, murder, family, and redemption. Adapting a Stephen King novel is no easy feat, but Gilroy pulled it off with this film.

3 Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

     Lucasfilm Ltd.

Gareth Edwards directed the Star Wars anthology film, Rogue One, which was well-received by critics and audiences alike. It introduced us to an array of new characters, while also bringing back some beloved old ones. Gilroy delivers a solid Star Wars story here, shining a light on the early years of the Rebellion. The cast includes Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, and Mads Mikkelson. Gilroy’s Disney+ series Andor takes place in the years leading up to Rogue One, and offers an in-depth look at Luna’s titular character.

2 The Bourne Ultimatum

The Bourne Ultimatum was directed by Oscar-nominee Paul Greengrass. This film is a solid conclusion to the original Bourne trilogy. We are given twists and turns from beginning to end, and Gilroy proved, once again, that he works very well within the Bourne franchise. The film features a cast of talented actors such as Matt Damon, Joan Allen, Edgar Ramirez, and Julia Stiles. The film is honest, entertaining, and will keep you on the edge of your seat.

1 Michael Clayton

Warner Bros. Pictures / Summit Entertainment

Gilroy wrote and directed the legal drama, Michael Clayton, featuring memorable performances from George Clooney and Tilda Swinton (the latter of whom would go on to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress). Michael Clayton brings you into the dark world of law and politics. It is especially realistic, making it that much better. Gilroy delivered the goods when it came to his directorial debut. He also proved that he can direct his own screenplays with precision and flair. The film is shocking and intriguing from beginning to end. Gilroy went on to be nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Writing, Original Screenplay.
