I Believe in Santa: The Plot

     Netflix

Lisa (Christina Moore) seems to have found the perfect man in Tom (John Ducey). They get along great and everything seems to be going well. But, Lisa wants to know what the catch is. What is it that she isn’t seeing in him? When the holidays roll around, she finds her answer. It turns out Tom is obsessed with Santa Claus, and even believes the person could be real.

The woman is stunned. When she first enters his home during the holidays, she’s shocked at the number of decorations and the prominence Mr. Claus has in them. While many may not be concerned about Christmas being someone’s favorite holiday, Lisa is because it’s her least favorite holiday. So much so that she wouldn’t write something at work because it was about the holiday.

How will their relationship change with this development? Can Lisa find it in herself to give the holiday a second chance? Can Tom understand why Lisa may not be comfortable with his interest?

The sneak peek shown on the Netflix shows Tom’s friend Assan (Sachin Bhatt) trying to convince him that Lisa will understand his love for the holiday if he gives her some time. Meanwhile, Lisa is expressing concern to her friend Sharon (Lateefah Holder), saying she may not be able to get over it.

Everything Else We Know

I Believe in Santa isn’t the first film, or even the first holiday flick, that Ducey has penned. If you want to watch his others, you can check out A Hollywood Christmas and A Christmas Mystery on HBOMax. He also wrote Lady Driver, That’s Amor, and Wheels of Fortune.

In an interview with LRM Online, Moore discusses how both I Believe in Santa and A Hollywood Christmas came to be. She and Ducey are married and worked together with director Ranarivelo on both movies during the pandemic as a way to stay busy. Warner Bros. approached them, asking if they had written any Christmas movies, which is how A Hollywood Christmas found its home.

She cites that I Believe in Santa is loosely based on her relationship with her husband, noting that they had a summer romance and then Ducey disappeared around September due to his love for football. Lisa and Tom have a similar summer romance, only for her to stop hearing from Tom in December. When she pops over, she sees it’s because he is obsessed with Christmas.

In order to show just how into Christmas Tom is, Moore notes that they had “like 36 boxes of Christmas swag” to create Tom’s Christmas-filled apartment. This included antique items, things that move, and other holiday items.

It is really about how do we find, how do we find kindness and love and acceptance for people who believe different things than we do.
