Fitting into a variety of different genres like its child’s play is a talent that not many actors have. To be able to go from one persona to the next, flawlessly, is one of the greatest things to watch in film. One actor that comes to our minds who fits the bill is the one and only Stanley Tucci. Tucci has been in so many movies, playing such starkly different characters, that anyone familiar with his filmography will stand back in awe. Tucci has been acting since the 80s, and he is still thriving in today’s industry.
Throughout his long career, there are countless movies that Tucci has been a part of that it is hard to narrow it down. From absolute classics like The Devil Wears Prada and Julie & Julia to big franchises like The Hunger Games and Captain America, it is pretty much impossible to look over such a present and versatile actor in the film industry today. Lucky for you, we have put together a list of the best of the best from Stanley Tucci.
9 Julie & Julia
Columbia Pictures
This is not the first time Tucci and Meryl Streep have crossed paths, and we just can’t get enough. Julie & Julia came out in 2009; the romance drama movie follows Julie Powell, played by Amy Adams, as she tries to make the recipes in Julia Child’s (Meryl Streep) cookbook. Tucci plays Paul Child, Julia’s husband.
8 Captain America: The First Avenger
Marvel Studios
It seems like every big name actor has been part of a major superhero franchise and, in this case, of course Tucci was in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point. In Captain America: The First Avenger, Tucci played Dr. Abraham Erskine, the scientist who is the mastermind behind the super soldier serum that births the hero we now all know as the beloved Captain America. Having any part in a franchise like the MCU is a huge deal, and Tucci definitely delivers a memorable performance despite minimal screen time.
7 The Hunger Games Trilogy
Lionsgate Films
The Hunger Games franchise is one of the most successful young adult book-to-movie dystopian franchises of all time. The story of Katniss Everdeen and the fall of The Capitol was a wild ride that we all went through with each new movie. A constant presence in these movies was the grand and full-of-life host of the Hunger Games press, Caesar Flickerman. Tucci completely encapsulates Caesar’s “larger than life” TV personality and is the perfect representation of the outlandish and overbearing lifestyle of elites in The Capitol.
6 The Lovely Bones
DreamWorks Pictures
Tucci has the unique ability to execute a broad spectrum of interesting characters that audiences sometimes do not realize the amount of roles he actually plays. In 2009’s The Lovely Bones, Tucci plays George Harvey, the seemingly friendly neighbor to the Salmon Family. However, he becomes responsible for the murder and disappearance of Suzie Salmon, a bright young girl played by Saoirse Ronan. This haunting and incredibly heartbreaking story includes an impeccable performance by Tucci that had us all on the edge of our seats, one that he called his “most difficult role” in an interview with Parade.
5 Easy A
Screen Gems
If in the discussion about the holy grail of romantic comedies, there is no way to leave out Easy A. This movie came out in 2010 and is one of Emma Stone’s most memorable and beloved projects to date. In this film, Tucci plays Dill Penderghast, Olive’s father. Tucci’s instinctual charm as an actor had him fit like a glove in this role and alongside this incredible cast, it is a movie none of us will ever forget.
4 Margin Call
Myriad Pictures
Tucci is Eric Dale in the 2011 drama thriller Margin Call. The movie takes place across a span of 24 hours, during which a massive bank in Wall Street attempts to navigate the financial crisis in 2008. Other names on this cast include Kevin Spacey as Sam Rogers, Paul Bettany as Will Emerson, Demi Moore as Sarah, and Jeremy Irons as John.
3 The Devil Wears Prada
Fox 2000 Pictures
The Devil Wears Prada has comfort movie written all over it. We have Streep playing the big name editor of Runway Magazine Miranda Priestly, Anne Hathaway as her new assistant Andy, and Tucci himself as Nigel, one of the closest confidants to Priestly (and, eventually, Andy). The combination of these three on-screen creates a cinematic experience that is fun, engaging, and immersive, and results in a must-watch on our list.
2 Big Night
Rysher Entertainment
We are going to take a trip back into the earlier years of Tucci’s acting career. The romance drama film Big Night came out in 1996. This film follows two brothers who are trying to make ends meet in their Italian restaurant Paradise in New Jersey. However, business rivalry hits them like the plague. The brothers Secondo (Tucci) and Primo (Tony Shalhoub) have to work together to make sure that their restaurant does not fall through the cracks.
1 Supernova
The Bureau
Supernova came out in 2020, and shows Tucci in an incredible, new light as an actor. This very intimate film follows a gay couple, Tusker (Tucci) and Sam (Colin Firth), who have been together for 20 years. They embark on a road trip and dementia begins to infiltrate their partnership. Supernova is a wonderful romance film that will definitely hit you right in the heart. If you are interested in seeing this movie, it is available to stream on Hulu.
