SPOILER ALERT: This story contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Better Call Saul season 6.

The final episodes of Better Call Saul have been riveting, and coming into the back half of season 6, multiple major characters have been killed off in big ways. While some characters may have been expected by some fans not to survive the show, simply going by their absences in Breaking Bad, these death scenes have still been captivating and memorable. That includes another big one that happened in episode 8 of season 6, dubbed “Point and Shoot.”

This episode picks up after a cliffhanger that saw Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton) murdering Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian) in Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) and Kim’s (Rhea Seehorn) apartment. After sending Kim on a mission to Gus Fring’s (Giancarlo Esposito) house with a gun to draw guards away from the laundry, Lalo ventures into the building that houses the secret meth lab that’s under construction. There, he encounters Gus, leading to a final showdown in the lab.

Gus had anticipated this situation and tricks Lalo, retrieving a gun that had been hidden and shooting every bullet in Lalo’s direction. Luckily for Gus, one bullet managed to hit Lalo in the neck, causing him to bleed out and die fairly quickly. In his final moments, Lalo looks up at Gus, and delivers a creepy laugh. He dies with a smile on his face before getting buried underneath the lab along with the body of Howard.

Lalo’s Smile Wasn’t Scripted

Lalo going out with a smile was a nice touch as it felt in line with the character while adding to the impact of his exit. But that moment was not in the script, according to writer and executive producer Gordon Smith. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Smith explains how that moment was something that came up on the fly during filming. For the Better Call Saul team, it felt right as it represented how Lalo still felt like he defeated Gus, even if he lost that final altercation.

New episodes of Better Call Saul arrive Mondays on AMC and AMC+.
