Since the final season of Better Call Saul was revealed to include a long awaited Breaking Bad crossover, with Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston reprising their roles as Jesse Pinkman and Walter White respectively, fans have been speculating on exactly how their appearance in the Bob Odenkirk-led series would happen. According to showrunner Peter Gould, so far he has not seen anyone come up with the correct way in which they make their debut in the show.

Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul has been a huge hit and tells the story of honest lawyer Jimmy McGill who ended up working for the cartel, and with season 6 bringing the story to a close, there was always a chance that the show would connect with its parent series towards the end of the run. Gould revealed that the series would see a number of familiar Breaking Bad characters showing before the series premiered, and with seven episodes gone, there are many fans still wanting to know when and how the return of White and Pinkman will happen. While talking to Entertainment Weekly, Gould explained that he has seen many theories, and although some have been close, no one has gotten it spot on. He said:

“I’ve heard a lot of few theories about what’s going to happen, and I’m happy to report I haven’t heard a theory that comes quite close to the actual fact.”

Better Call Saul Can Bring Back Breaking Bad Characters Through Flashforwards

The main events of Better Call Saul are set a long time before Walter White and Jesse Pinkman meet for the first time, and that caused an issue as to how, even at the very end of the series, there could be any meaningful crossover between the characters of the two properties. However, Better Call Saul has utilized flashforwards in its storytelling, allowing views to be transported into Saul’s future beyond the fifth season of Breaking Bad, and catching up the lawyer under his new alias of “Gene.”

It seems likely that this device is what will be used to bring White and Pinkman into Saul’s story, but with their appearance possibly coming from any point along the Breaking Bad timeline, it is no wonder why fans have had a lot of trouble guessing exactly when and how it will occur. From what Gould has said, when it does come, the pair’s return is likely to surprise many fans.

Although Better Call Saul is coming to an end, and Breaking Bad has already has a sequel in the Netflix movie El Camino, which saw Aaron Paul reprising his role as Jesse and followed events after Walter’s death, Gould has hinted that there could well be more stories yet to tell from the Breaking Bad universe in the future, something that AMC’s Dan McDermott recently said they would love to pursue.

“I can tell you that if I could do anything to encourage Vince and Peter to continue on in this universe, I would do it. I think you’d have to ask THEM, but the door is always open and I long for the day my phone rings and Vince, Peter or our friends at Sony call to say, ‘Hey, I think we have another show set in this universe.’”
