This story contains MAJOR SPOILERS for season 6 of Better Call Saul.
The sixth and final season of Better Call Saul is underway, kicking off its first few episodes with several major twists and turns. As a prequel series, many fans already know that there are a lot of characters that can be expected to survive to the end, as they’ll go on to appear on Breaking Bad. This also means that there had always been a lot of fan interest on Better Call Saul’s original characters who weren’t featured on the parent series, as their fates were left completely unknown.
Ignacio “Nacho” Varga, played by Michael Mando, was one such character. He’s briefly mentioned by Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) in a Breaking Bad episode but never physically appeared in that series. Many fans had taken kindly to Varga over the course of six seasons and were hoping that the lack of Nacho on Breaking Bad meant that maybe the double agent would be the first person to make himself disappear by calling a certain vacuum repair store.

Alas, that wasn’t the case. The third episode of season 6 saw Nacho taking the full blame for the attack on the Salamanca compound, sparing Gus (Giancarlo Esposito) from experiencing any cartel fallout. This ensured that Nacho’s father would stay alive, as Mike guaranteed that would happen as long as Nacho cooperated. Going out as a hero was perhaps a fitting end for the character whose morals didn’t exactly align with the ruthless criminals he had worked for, though it was emotional for many fans to see.

After taking a bit of time to let emotions ease, Michael Mando took to social media to speak about his experience with wrapping up Nacho Varga’s story. He posted an image with the crew on the set that day, each of them wearing Nacho T-shirts to show their support. Mando explains how the crew surprised him that day with the gesture and made him realize how special the character had become to others.
In a separate interview with The A.V. Club, Mando also spoke a little more about playing the Nacho character. He opened up on filming his character’s final scene and how it has inspired him with what kinds of roles he will be pursuing in other film and TV projects.
