The world is in mourning after the passing of beloved comedy legend Betty White, but it might help to know that she knew how loved and appreciated she was. Jeff Witjas, the 99-year-old’s agent and longtime friend, opened up about losing White in a new interview with People. While White didn’t personally spend time on social media to really see the full extent of her popularity, Witjas says he made it a habit to tell the Golden Girls star frequently.
Witjas says that even when she wasn’t working, he’d continue to tell her how in demand she was, both with fans and with producers. He says that for a long time, White would personally address her fan letters, but that had slowed down as she got older and “just didn’t have the energy” to keep up with it all any longer. In what would be her last years, White had been keeping to herself at home to stay safe during the pandemic. With her animal companions always nearby, White comfortable in her surroundings, and while she intended on reaching her 100th birthday, the legend seems to have died happy.

White hadn’t feared death as she always believed she’d be reunited with her husband in the afterlife. Knowing that her time was running short, White also declined to replace her golden retriever Pontiac after the dog died a few years back. While Witjas would kit with her that she’s “outliving everybody,” White insisted not to adopt a new dog as she “was so sensitive to animals” and didn’t want any new pets to outlive her. She truly was a remarkable person in every way.
The world is a less funny place after the passing of Betty White. She will forever be missed, but her legacy will shine brightly forever. Rest in peace.
