A major update has just arrived for the long-gestating sequel Beverly Hills Cop 4. After many years of false starts when it came to continuing Axel Foley’s story, it has since been announced that the sequel will be made at Netflix with Eddie Murphy back as the streetsmart cop from Detroit who always winds up investigating major cases in California. Now, per Deadline, the film’s official title has been revealed along with the announcement of two new cast members that will star alongside Murphy.
Officially, Beverly Hills Cop 4 has been titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Joining Murphy in the sequel in main roles will be Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Details on their characters have not been revealed and it’s not yet clear which side of the law their characters will be on. There also hasn’t been any word yet if any other stars from the original three movies will reunite with Murphy in the new film.

Beverly Hills Cop 4 Has Been in Development for Years
The Beverly Hills Cop franchise kicked off with the original installment in 1984. In the film, Detroit cop Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) travels to Beverly Hills to investigate the murder of a fellow officer. In 1987’s Beverly Hills Cop II, Axel returns to California to help his old pals Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Taggart (John Ashton) investigate when he learns that Captain Bogomil (Ronny Cox) had been shot. 1994’s Beverly Hills Cop III brought Axel back to Beverly Hills once again when a new investigation points to an amusement park in the city known as Wonderworld.
In 2013, there had been a pilot filmed for CBS about potentially turning Beverly Hills Cop into a TV series. Murphy appeared for a cameo in the pilot episode but was not intended to be more involved than that, essentially passing on the torch to a new actor. CBS ultimately passed on the series with Murphy later claiming that it was because Axel Foley’s involvement was so limited. That seems to be a mistake rectified with the upcoming movie that puts Axel back into the lead role, making that clear from its title alone.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley does not yet have an official premiere date on Netflix.
