HBO has given the green light to another season of Barry. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the acclaimed hitman drama has been officially renewed for season 4. The news comes partway through its third season with HBO execs pleased with the show’s continued success. HBO Programming Executive VP Amy Gravitt also confirmed the renewal with a statement that you can read below.

This early renewal means that production can start more quickly on the fourth season. The plan is to start filming as early as June with series star Bill Hader directing all eight episodes. The series comes from Hader and Alec Berg, who serve as writers and directors. The pair also executive produce with Aida Rodgers and Liz Sarnoff. Julie Camino produces. Along with Hader, the series stars Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, Glenn Fleshler, Anthony Carrigan, Sarah Burns, and Henry Winkler.

Barry is a black comedy series, though there are some heavy elements of drama. Hader has been praised for the way he has been able to toe the line with his titular character. The series stars Hader as Barry Berkman, a hitman from Ohio who inadvertently winds up in an acting class while on assignment in Los Angeles. He takes to acting surprisingly well and decides he wants to pursue performing as a new career, but his past is not quite so easy to leave behind.

Barry Has Been a Hit With Critics

Barry has been a tremendous success with the critics all throughout its run. It debuted with a near perfect score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season. The show has only gotten better since then, as both seasons 3 and 4 are sitting with 100% perfect ratings. Overall, ratings are around the same for season 3 as they’ve always been, so HBO seems to have all they need to feel confident in moving forward with season 4.

The series has also been a darling at awards season. That includes Primetime Emmy Award wins for both Bill Hader and Henry Winkler, with Hader winning for his acting on two separate occasions. Berg has credited Hader’s acting abilities as a driving force behind the success of the show, and three seasons in, it all seems to have only gotten better.

“He’s freakishly talented,” Berg said in April, per Forbes. “In terms of growth, it’s just about experience and confidence. He has the ability to do all of it. Now three seasons in, I don’t think that his skills have gotten any sharper. I think he’s just more confident. He has had more reps, so he knows what he wants and what he doesn’t want and he knows how to get it and what the scene is. So, I think he has gotten more efficient.”
