Netflix has released the official trailer for the new two-part documentary film Bill Russell: Legend. Set to start streaming on Feb. 8, the doc explores the life of Russell on and off the court, detailing how the NBA legend also “changed more than the game” with his work as a civil rights activist. The documentary features the final interview with Russell filmed prior to his passing in 2022. Also interviewed for the doc to help tell Russell’s story are Steph Curry, Chris Paul, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Larry Bird, Jim Brown, Isiah Thomas, and Jayson Tatum. Friends and family are also featured in exclusive interviews. Corey Stoll serves as narrator and Bill Russell excerpts are read by Jeffrey Wright.

Bill Russell Helped Change the World for the Better

Russell is widely considered to be among the greatest basketball players to have ever competed for the National Basketball Association. The five-time MVP and 11-time NBA Championships winner would even be awarded with a Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama in 2011, both for his accomplishments as the first Black superstar of the NBA as well as his tireless work in the civil rights movement, fighting for change. When Russell died in 2022, the #6 jersey was retired, and to date, he is the only NBA player to have ever been given this honor.
