Black Adam’s profitability may still be a subject of debate, but the movie is following up its recent digital release with an imminent HBO Max streaming debut. Fans of Dwayne Johnson’s mighty anti-hero will get an early Christmas gift on Dec. 16 when the movie joins the platform to be streamed by subscribers.
While there will still be plenty of people who have not yet seen Black Adam, how successful the movie’s streaming drop will turn out to be following the recent rumors that Black Adam 2 is unlikely going ahead is yet to be seen. In fact, Black Adam’s central role in the DCU going forward is in doubt, making the film a cinematic equivalent of a Netflix series being canceled after one season.
In the last week, reports suggested that the film will struggle to break even between the movie’s colossal production costs and equally extravagant marketing budget and could end up losing the studio as much as $100 million. Soon after this report was published, Johnson took to his Twitter account to, as he put it, set the record straight on the movie’s financial situation. According to The Rock, the film will actually turn a profit, albeit a small one for such a movie. Which of these reports is correct is anyone’s guess. But, having only been on digital sale since November 22, it looks like Black Adam is now being put out to graze.
Dwayne Johnson Has Become a One-Man Marketing Machine For Henry Cavill’s Superman
Warner Bros. Pictures
As well as bigging up his own role in Black Adam, Dwayne Johnson has spent months singing the praises of Henry Cavill, and has more or less taken full credit for bringing the Man of Steel back to the DCU. However, this could be another dead-in-the-water move if the reports of Henry Cavill’s involvement in the DCU’s future also being up in the air are true. That hasn’t stopped Johnson from making his thoughts on Cavill clear. He said in a recent social media post:
Black Adam and Superman’s roles in the coming DCU overhaul will be revealed soon, and hopefully before many fans stop caring one way or the other.
“We have to bring back the most powerful, unstoppable force of all time in any universe. You guys know who I’m talking about, it’s Superman. That’s Henry Cavill. At the end of the day, the studio wasn’t bringing Henry back, inexplicably and inexcusably but we weren’t going to take no for an answer, This has been years in the making, bringing Henry Cavill back with strategic conversations and we were not going to take no for an answer. For us, there’s no viable logical way to build out the DC Universe without the most powerful force and the greatest superhero of all time sitting on the sidelines, it’s impossible to do. You can Venn diagram this thing 90 times but it all comes back to, ‘Where’s Superman?’ You have to have Superman in the mix, so that’s why we fought hard to bring Superman back.”
