Dwayne Johnson has been teasing a Black Adam vs Superman face-off for what seems like forever, but it looks like there is a bigger plan in place for the ultimate DC punch-up than just a one-off moment. Hiram Garcia, who produces many of Johnson’s movies including Black Adam, has revealed that there is a plan for Henry Cavill’s Superman to fight Black Adam in a “long-form story” and not simply turn up and have a brawl.

Dwayne Johnson has been a force to be reckoned with when it comes to bringing Black Adam to screen, having been originally destined to debut in Shazam!, Johnson convinced Warner Bros. to give him his own solo movie first. Now it looks like Johnson has been throwing a number of suggestions into the ring as to how he believes the DCEU should be handled in future, and Black Adam certainly seems to be a central part of that. During an interview with CinemaBlend, Garcia gave some elaboration on how the beef between Black Adam and Superman will be handled. He said:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“It’s never been about a one off or just about a fight. No, it’s about so much more than that. We really want to craft a long-form of storytelling and show that these two characters exist in the same universe and are going to have to deal with each other often, either on the same or opposite sides. Hopefully they’re going to clash at some point, but it’s not just about a ‘one fight’ situation. That was never our dream. That does not reward the fans. Fans want to feel a journey between these guys knowing that these guys exist in the same universe.”

Will Black Adam and Superman’s Fight Become the Focus of the DCEU?

The DCEU has been, at best, disjointed, and at its worst a complete mess. Whatever the reasons behind the highs and lows of the franchise, beyond the upcoming releases of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Shazam! Fury of The Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle, the world of the DCEU seems to be in for a shake-up ahead of its next round of films.

Although there is currently no confirmation that Henry Cavill will be back as Superman in Man of Steel 2, the talk around Cavill’s entanglement with Black Adam does make it much more of a possibility than it was a couple of years ago. However, beyond that it is hard to know exactly where the DCEU will be heading next, and with which heroes. While there are the likes of Wonder Woman 3 and some kind of Black Adam/Shazam! crossover movie to come, the main aim of the DCEU going forward is to attempt to emulate the kind of long-game storytelling that Marvel Studios have perfected over the last fourteen years.

With Dwayne Johnson having frequently commented on how he is dedicated to Black Adam’s future, as well as his willingness to be an “advisor” to whoever takes over from departing DC Films president Walter Hamada, it certainly seems that Black Adam has definitely arrived, as Johnson himself often puts it, to shake up the hierarchy of the DCEU.

Black Adam is in cinemas now.
