James Bond star Pierce Brosnan has been discussing his role as Doctor Fate in the upcoming DC outing, Black Adam. In an interview with Games Radar, Brosnan described his superhero character as “the elder” of the Justice Society of America, and likened Doctor Fate’s abilities to “a drug addiction.”

The son of an archeologist who has learned sorcery and been given the magical Helmet of Fate, Doctor Fate was created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Howard Sherman and first appeared in the comics all the way back in 1940. When his father is killed while looking for the tomb holding the ancient being known as Nabu, the being takes pity on Kent, taking him on as his apprentice and using his vast magical powers to teach him the ways of sorcery.

“I am the elder of the group. I’m assured he’s one of the oldest characters in the pantheon of comic-book characters. He’s an archaeologist.”

Doctor Fate is considered one of the most powerful wielders of magic in the DC universe, something that is both a blessing and a curse in Black Adam.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has previously praised Brosnan’s DC debut, with fans eager to see what the actor brings to the pantheon of superheroes.

“He has powers to foresee the future, and raise the dead, and teleport, while wearing a gold helmet. Absolutely, yes [the helmet is essential]. It’s a blessing and a curse. It’s almost like a drug addiction in some respects. It takes a lot of energy to wear the helmet. It was a very beautifully designed outfit and helmet, which I’m quite fond of. Jaume Collet-Serra is very inclusive in the collaboration. He was wonderful in the sense that he would send me designs of the helmet, so I could participate in the look of it.”
