The Blade Runner Franchise Is Still Going Strong After 40 Years

Released in 1982, Blade Runner is based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Set in a dystopian world in an alternate 2019, it follows a burnt-out cop hunting down a fugitive group of synthetic humans, known as “replicants,” who’ve escaped back to Earth. The movie stars Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos. While initially underperforming at the box office, the film became a cult hit and became one of the most influential movies of all time.

Meanwhile, the franchise has also been expanded into the world of animation. Alcon teamed up with Crunchyroll and Adult Swim to develop the anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus, which premiered in November. The animated series takes place in Los Angeles 1932, following a female replicant protagonist voiced by Jessica Henwick. The strong voice cast also includes Will Yun Lee, Samira Wiley, Wes Bentley, Brian Cox, Josh Duhamel, Peyton List, Stephen Root, and Barkhad Abdi.
