A new photo reveals our official first look at Blockbuster, a comedy series in the works at Netflix. Set in the last Blockbuster Video store that remains open in the United States, the series stars Melissa Fumero and Randall Park as clerks just trying to get by in a business that’s almost been completely destroyed. The first look image may feel nostalgic for many to look at as most Blockbuster Video locations have been shuttered for years, ironically thanks to Netflix and other streaming services.

The first look photo comes shortly before Fumero, Park, JB Smoove, and Tyler Alvarez will compete against each other in a movie Trivia Happy Hour event out of Netflix is a Joke: The Festival. Production on the series is currently underway but doesn’t have a release date announced by Netflix. For now, you can read the official logline below to get more of an idea of what Blockbuster is like.

Blockbuster is produced by Universal Television. It is created by Vanessa Ramos (Superstore, Brooklyn Nine-Nine). David Caspe (Happy Endings, Black Monday) and Jackie Clarke (Superstore, Happy Endings) serve as writers. Caspe and Clarke are also executive producing alongside John Davis and John Fox for Davis Entertainment (Jungle Cruise). The show stars Randall Park, Melissa Fumero, Tyler Alvarez, Madeleine Arthur, Olga Merediz, JB Smoove, and Kamaia Fairburn.

Blockbuster’s Creators Say the Show is a Dream Come True

“To say getting to make a show about a place I love, with my friends Jackie and David, and Randall Park as our star is a dream come true, somehow feels like an understatement,” Ramos said in a statement when the show was announced. “I could not be more grateful to Jim [Donnelly] and Megan [Macmillan] at Universal for supporting this project since day one and Tracey, Andy [Weil], and the whole team at Netflix for being on board with so many weird jokes.”

Netflix’s Tracey Pakosta also said, “When Vanessa and David first came in and shared this idea for a comedy series, we were immediately excited. This is ultimately the story of a dedicated group of co-workers, with a lot of heart. And now with the hilarious Randall Park signing on to play the lead, it’s a no-brainer.”

At one time, Blockbuster Video was the premiere video rental store. The rise of Netflix and streaming services turned the tide on the movie rental business, and in a matter of years, most Blockbuster stores had closed in the United States. There remains one brick-and-mortar location that’s open in the country, which is in Bend, Oregon. A documentary has been made about the store and its local residents continue to rent movies from the establishment with the hopes of keeping the last Blockbuster alive.

No premiere date has yet been announced for Blockbuster.
