Ana de Armas has had a stellar rise to fame over the last few years, but when it comes to her latest role as Marilyn Monroe, she is fully aware that certain nude scenes from the Netflix movie Blonde will end up circulating online. While discussing her upcoming role as the movie icon, de Armas noted that it gives her a “bad taste” to think about where the riskier scenes from the movie will end up in the future, but added that it is something she cannot really think about.

De Armas has been adding a number of big roles to her resume of late, including appearances in No Time To Die, Knives Out and the upcoming John Wick spin-off Ballerina, but first up, she will take on what could be the role of a lifetime, playing Marilyn Monroe in Netflix’s adaptation of the 2000 novel about the life of the Hollywood star. While discussing the movie with Variety, de Armas touched on how she is under no illusions that her nude scenes in the movie will end up in other places on the internet. She said:

“It’s upsetting just to think about it. I can’t control it; you can’t really control what they do and how they take things out of context. I don’t think it gave me second thoughts; it just gave me a bad taste to think about the future of those clips. I did things in this movie I would have never done for anyone else, ever. I did it for her, and I did it for [Blonde director Andrew Dominik].”

Blonde is set to be the role that could really see de Armas break out in a big way, not that she hasn’t brought a lot of praise upon herself for her previous roles. However, as a Latin actress taking on the role of a white American icon, there has obviously been plenty of opinions shared online, and not all of them positive.

Despite these comments, the movie itself has been pulling in some hefty praise, both for the movie itself and de Armas’ central performance, which dominates the entire near-three-hour runtime. In addition to that, de Armas has gained some heavyweight backing from the movie’s producer Brad Pitt, who called her “phenomenal,” as well as the estate of Monroe, who said in a statement:

De Armas herself also addressed her position as a Cuban actress who doesn’t want to be “putting a basket of fruit on my head” in every role she takes on. So far, she has proven herself well beyond being typecast in that kind of stereotypical way, and the full release of Blonde on Netflix on September 26 will certainly add weight to that.

“Marilyn Monroe is a singular Hollywood and pop culture icon that transcends generations and history. Any actor that steps into that role knows they have big shoes to fill. Based on the trailer alone, it looks like Ana was a great casting choice as she captures Marilyn’s glamour, humanity and vulnerability. We can’t wait to see the film in its entirety!”
