The Academy Awards aired on ABC on Sunday night, and to put it lightly, it was a rather interesting occasion. While a particular altercation on stage has gotten everyone talking, another source of controversy rose from the event based on the Oscars’ annual In Memoriam segment. Every year, the awards show will select a variety of screen performers who’d passed away over the past year. This year, the Academy took the time to deliver some extra focus on Betty White and Sidney Poitier, both of whom were, of course, deserving of the attention.
By the time the segment was over, however, Bob Saget’s name was quickly picking up some steam on social media. Though he passed away very shortly after White and Poitier, many fans of the late Full House star and beloved comedian were stunned to see that Saget didn’t get so much as a mention during the tribute. Aside from spending decades entertaining fans and establishing himself as a comedy icon, it should also be noted that Saget was an Oscar winner himself, having won a student Oscar for his 1977 documentary Through Adam’s Eyes.

“Cancel the #oscars for not mentioning Bob Saget in the Memoriam,” one fan puts it.
Another fan lamented, “The only thing I’ll say about the #oscars is that they had three and half months to add Bob Saget to the In Memoriam section and they didn’t do it. You just insert the image in the timeline. It’s not hard. I guess that’s one more thing they didn’t have time for this year.”
“Norm Macdonald and Bob Saget weren’t in the Oscar death montage. Perhaps it’s because they weren’t primarily known as ‘movie people,’” another fan theorizes. “Or perhaps it’s because, despite this, they made the greatest movie of all time, Dirty Work (1998), and Hollywood never forgave them for it.”
It Was a History-Making Night at the Oscars
ABC
It was a historic night at the Oscars. Some of the biggest awards handed out during the evening include Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) for Best Supporting Actress; Troy Kotsur (CODA) for Best Supporting Actor; Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog) for Best Director; CODA for Best Picture; and Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) for Best Lead Actress.
While Will Smith also made history in one way by winning his first Oscar for King Richard, he did so another way by becoming the first Best Actor winner to slap an award presenter on the stage. Though there were many memorable moments during an otherwise upbeat show, what everyone is talking about is the slap heard around the world. While Chris Rock was preparing to present an Oscar, he first cracked some jokes about the famous guests in the audience, which included the quip that he was looking forward to G.I. Jane 2, referring to Jada Pinkett Smith’s short hairstyle.
Perhaps controversy is inevitable when it comes to the Oscars. You can check out more information about the ceremony at the official website for the Academy Awards.
