Neil LaBute’s domestic thriller Lakeview Terrace took the top spot this weekend with $15.6 million. The film, starring Samuel L. Jackson, managed to scare up enough of an audience to beat out last week’s winner Burn After Reading. The Coen Brothers’ latest dark comedy crawled into second place with a decent $11.2 million in its second week of release. So far, this onscreen reunion between Brad Pitt and George Clooney has taken in an accumulated total of $36.4 million.

A number of other new releases saw their way into the multiplex this weekend. Coming in third was the Dane Cook comedy My Best Friend’s Girl, which clocked in with a paltry $8.3 million. MGM’s animated scarefest Igor, which features the voice talents of John Cusack and Eddie Izzard, was nipping at Dane’s heels in fourth place with a very close $8 million. But it was Ricky Gervais that felt the coldest shoulder from audiences. His new comedy Ghost Town debuted at number eight with just $5.1 million to its name.
Two smaller films managed to clobber the per screen average of the weekend, with Keira Knightly in The Duchess earning $29,000 from each of its seven screens for a total of $203,000. Right behind it was Ed Harris’ Western Appaloosa, which took in $18,429 from each of its fourteen screens for a total of $258,000.
Next week should see a definite boost in ticket sales with the release of D.J. Caruso’s thriller Eagle Eye, as well as the Chuck Palahniuk adaptation Choke, Kirk Cameron’s marriage drama Fireproof, and Richard Gere and Diane Lane in Nights in Rodanthe.
