Gunn will be featured as a recurring star on Sugar, as will veteran actor James Cromwell (Succession, Six Feet Under). Another actor from the Breaking Bad franchise will be featured in a series regular role, as Dennis Boutsikaris (Mayfair Witches), who played rich Schweikart in Better Call Saul, has also been cast. Anna Gunn Won the Emmy for Playing Skyler White

Anna Gunn is a winner of two Emmy awards, both for her performance as Skyler White, the wife of Bryan Cranston’s Walter White, in the hit show Breaking Bad. Despite the acclaim from critics, there were many viewers who had expressed dislike for her character. At the time, it bothered Gunn enough to write an op-ed for The New York Times about the experience. More recently, Vince Gilligan told the New Yorker that he didn’t understand the backlash for Skyler.

“Back when the show first aired, Skyler was roundly disliked,” Gilligan said. “I think that always troubled Anna Gunn [who played Skyler]. And I can tell you it always troubled me, because Skyler, the character, did nothing to deserve that. And Anna certainly did nothing to deserve that. She played the part beautifully. I realize in hindsight that the show was rigged, in the sense that the storytelling was solely through Walt’s eyes, even in scenes he wasn’t present for. Even Gus, his archenemy, didn’t suffer the animosity Skyler received. It’s a weird thing. I’m still thinking about it all these years later.”

Since Breaking Bad, Gunn has appeared in movies like Sully, Being Frank, and Land of Dreams. She also starred in the crime drama Gracepoint alongside David Tennant and has appeared in other shows like Criminal Minds, Shades of Blue, Prodigal Son, and Physical. In 2019, Gunn also reprised her role from Deadwood for HBO’s Deadwood: The Movie. Though Bryan Cranston and Betsy Brandt would respectively appear in Better Call Saul as Skyler’s husband and sister, Gunn did not return as Skyler in that show.

Sugar does not yet have a premiere date.
