You may or may not have been pronouncing Brendan Fraser’s name incorrectly. For many of the actor’s fans, they’re learning that they’re a part of the latter category after hearing definitely how to pronounce Fraser’s last name correctly. Though the name is spelled differently, it’s often pronounced as “Frasier,” like the 1990s sitcom starring Kelsey Grammer. Countless fans have spent years referring to Fraser this way, but as it turns out, they’ve been saying it wrong.
In Variety’s latest Actors on Actors interview with Fraser and Adam Sandler, the two cleared the air once and for all when it comes to the pronunciation. Sandler himself, despite his longtime friendship with Fraser, introduced his Airheads co-star by pronouncing his name as “Brendan Frasier,” questioning if he was saying the name accurately. That’s when Fraser clarified that the correct pronunciation rhymes with “razor,” as in the shaving utensil. It’s just as hard for Sandler to accept as it is for the fans who’ve gotten accustomed to the other way of saying it.

“I’m gonna say ‘Frasier’ anyway. Let me say ‘Frasier,’” Sandler jokes.
“Okay, f*ck it, nobody’s ever gotten my name right,” Fraser relents.
Testing out an alternate introduction with the correct pronunciation, Sandler adds, “Ladies and gentlemen, Brendan Fraser! See? It doesn’t sound right.”
“It felt good though!” Fraser laments.

Fans are wrestling with this correction, as Sandler did in the Variety video. Tweets from fans feeling embarrassed or awkward about the mistake have been going viral, showing just how widespread the incorrect way of saying the name had become. As one fan realizes, “I’ve been saying brendan fraser’s name wrong for years.”
“PSA: Just learned Brendan Fraser pronounces his last name as if it rhymes with ‘razor’ and we’ve all been saying it wrong this whole time including me,” says someone else.
And hoping that we all learn from this and band together to ensure we all say his name the right way from now on, another fan tweeted, “Today I learned it’s pronounced ‘Brendan Fraser’ (as in blazer, laser, taser). And I just think that if we’re all rooting for him and lovin’ the guy– as we SHOULD– we should also start saying his name right.”
No matter how you say his name, one good way to support Fraser would be to go out and see his new movie, The Whale, which is now playing in theaters.
