With The Mummy remaining one of Brendan Fraser’s most popular films, could we possibly see the actor return as Rick O’Connell in a legacy sequel? These days, the possibility seems very real, given how many other franchises have been revived in recent years. Actors reprising classic roles in legacy sequels has already had many fans demanding another Mummy movie with Fraser returning alongside Rachel Weisz.

There are no plans for that to happen at this time, but because the fan interest is there, Fraser was asked about the possibility in a recent interview with Variety. He explained that he does have some apprehension about reprising his role from The Mummy as he isn’t quite sure how well that “would work,” but clarifies that he’d be open to it if presented with the right opportunity. As Fraser puts it:

The Mummy Rebooted Lacked the “Fun” of the Fraser Films

Something that could be holding back The Mummy from getting revived is the previous reboot’s failures. Starring Tom Cruise is an unrelated story that’s much darker than the action-adventure films with Fraser, 2017’s the Mummy was met with negative reviews and a poor box office performance. That killed plans to reinvent the franchise for what Universal had been touting as the Dark Universe.

Fraser also commented on what led to Cruise’s The Mummy flopping. He suggested that the film was too much of a horror movie to be enjoyed in the same way that audiences had appreciated the previous films.

For now, Fraser is taking some time off before choosing his next role, and given how in demand he is at the moment, he certainly won’t be having a shortage of offers. The actor says he won’t be setting up his next project until later this year or early 2023. At this time, he’s remaining focused on the release of The Whale, which hits theaters in December. Garnering early Oscar buzz for Fraser, that film will officially hit theaters on Dec. 9, 2022.
