Actor Brendan Fraser’s comeback has become a hot topic as he continues to receive awards, nominations, and acclaim for his performance in The Whale. He’s set to receive another accolade, the Spotlight Award, at the Palm Springs International Film Awards, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The chairman of the festival, Harold Matzner, explains why they chose Fraser:
The award ceremony will take place on January 5th of next year, at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Other actors who have received this award in the past include Bryan Cranston, Andrew Garfield, Sam Rockwell, and J.K. Simmons. Actors and actresses who will be honored at the Palm Springs International Film Awards for their performances this year include Cate Blanchett, Austin Butler, Danielle Deadwyler, Colin Farrell, Bill Nighy, Sarah Polley, and Michelle Yeoh.

Brendan Fraser has also been nominated for a Gotham Award, an Oscar Award, and a Golden Globe award, although he will boycott the latter ceremony, having been sexually assaulted by one of the event’s organizers years earlier. This was one of the reasons Brendan Fraser fell out of favor in Hollywood, along with physical injuries sustained doing stunts for his action movies, and a messy divorce that cost him colossal alimony payments.

Now that Brendan Fraser has gained wider recognition, he’s been appearing in numerous roles (such as Charlie Jolpin in 2019’s Line of Descent, pictured above) after being relatively absent from the acting scene. He’s been cast as W.S. Hamilton in Killers of the Flower Moon, which is based on the Osage Indian Murders committed in the 1920s. The film will be directed by Martin Scorsese, and other stars include Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemmons, and Leonardo DiCaprio. It’s set to release in 2023.
Another upcoming Brendan Fraser movie is the comedy Brothers, although he’ll have a smaller role. Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage star has the titular brothers, and the screenplay will be written by Etan Cohen and Macon Blair. The movie has yet to receive a solid release date.
The Whale is director Darren Aronofsky’s adaptation of a play written by Samuel D. Hunter. Brendan Fraser has the lead role, with co-stars including Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, and Ty Simpkins. A24 distributes the film, which premiered at film festivals and select theaters earlier this year but will receive a wider theatrical release on December 21st, 2022.
