We know that Bruce Campbell will be appearing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but the big question that fans will have to wait to see answered is who the actor will be playing. Traditionally, Campbell has played different characters in Sam Raimi’s Marvel movies, appearing as someone new in all three Spider-Man films. With Raimi on board as the director of the Doctor Strange sequel, it was inevitable that Campbell would be involved with this film as well.

While Campbell has teased his cameo appearance, the actor has not revealed who he will be playing, leaving it to the fans to speculate until the film is released in May. On April 1, which is not-co-coincidentally April Fools’ Day, Campbell posted an image of himself in the makeup chair looking a lot like Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. Though clearly doctored, Campbell coyly jokes that he’ll be playing a Doctor Strange variant in the movie, which is certainly a possibility.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“I always feel a little strange when I work on a Sam Raimi movie,” Campbell wrote in the tweet, adding the hashtag #multiverse.

We need to keep in mind that this is not the first time Campbell has used April Fools’ Day as a way to jokingly tease his cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Last year, the actor similarly took to Twitter to tease a return as his Evil Dead character, Ash Williams, in the Marvel sequel. Campell posted a photo of a script page he said was from the Doctor Strange 2 script, detailing a scene of Doctor Strange meeting the chainsaw-handed warrior.

In the faux scene, Doctor Strange is described as finding himself alone in “mist-covered woods” when he meets a “disheveled” man emerging from a cabin who has a “chainsaw where his right hand should be.” Strange tells the Evil Dead hero that he’s looking for an “ancient book of magic, a grimoire of darkness and evil,” which reminds Ash of another particular book - the Necromicon.

“Does it have a face on the cover?” Ash asks.

Bruce Campbell Will Appear in Doctor Strange 2, But Who Will He Play?

     Marvel/Sony

It’s hard to say who Bruce Campbell could be playing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, as he has only vaguely teased his appearance. As Campbell has used April Fools’ Day to joke about showing up in the sequel as Ash Williams or a Doctor Strange variant, both of which have been rumored to, he likely won’t be playing either of these characters, as this would outright spoil the cameo. Then again, maybe that’s just what Campbell wants us to think.

We will all find out one way or another when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is released in movie theaters on May 6, 2022.
