One question that has never been answered in The Addams Family’s screen outings is where exactly did Thing come from? The disembodied hand is an iconic character in the franchise and has recently been seen in a prominent role alongside Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday in the new Netflix series. Now it seems that one fan theory has suggested that Thing is actually the lost hand of Ash Williams from the Evil Dead franchise, and this is something Bruce Campbell was happy to share.
The post in question shows an image of Thing and a picture of Campbell’s Evil Dead protagonist with his missing hand. For fans of the horror franchise, it is well known that Ash Williams was forced to sever his own hand when it became possessed and attempted to kill him in Evil Dead II. The hand is then frequently seen running around during the latter part of the movie, and now the idea that this hand ended up being taken in by The Addams Family is one that is hard to shake off. Check out the post shared by Campbell below:

While the theory obviously doesn’t make sense when considering the timeline of these two franchises, that could easily be ignored if anyone wanted to go down the route of a crossover. However, if nothing else, it is certainly a fun explanation of Thing’s origin, and one that is made all the more believable by Wednesday’s version of Thing being quite fond of flipping the bird at people who annoy him, something Ash’s possessed hand was also adept at.
Wednesday Continues to Rack Up Huge Viewer Numbers, But Still No Renewal
MGM Worldwide Television and Digital Distribution
Having already broken records with its debut, Wednesday has continued to grow its audience. Currently, it stands as the second most-watched series in Netflix history during its first 28 days of release. While the series is not expected to surpass Stranger Things 4’s English-language record, the fact that Wednesday has a much shorter run time but is not too far behind speaks volumes for the popularity of the Jenna Ortega-led show.
Netflix’s Peter Friedlander recently addressed Wednesday’s possible renewal, as many fans cannot understand why one of the streamer’s most popular titles ever is still awaiting an official green light for more seasons. Head of U.S. and Canada scripted series Friedlander said:
If Netflix decided to pass on a second season of Wednesday, it would be one of the most shocking decisions in the streamer’s history. However, having proven itself with mostly positive reviews, constantly increasing viewership, viral social media presence, and the ability of Jenna Ortega to step out of the shadow of her predecessors in the title role, it is surely only a matter of time before news of Wednesday’s renewal arrives.
“You may know what I’m going to say — but I have nothing to confirm at this time. I am optimistic about Wednesday. We’ll leave it at that. Weirdly, because it feels different, but we’re just two weeks into the launch of Wednesday. So we’re still really at the beginning of this cultural phenomenon. And there’s a lot to absorb and learn about it.”
