A sequel to The Batman was confirmed to be in the works just recently, and already new details are being revealed. Director and writer Matt Reeves spoke with Collider about the upcoming film, saying that the focus will remain on Bruce Wayne, who is the “emotional center” of the film:

This might seem like an obvious detail, but considering how many Batman films tend to shift the focus away from Batman himself and more on his villains (commonly referred to as a rogues’ gallery), it’s interesting to learn that Reeves intends to keep the spotlight on the caped crusader himself. Robert Pattinson’s take on Bruce Wayne shows his more vulnerable and angry side, something that Reeves considers special.

“To me, the thing that I really feel is that I also believe that Rob [Pattinson] is so special in the role. My goal has always been to do these point-of-view stories that allow the character to always be the emotional center of the story. Because a lot of times what happens is, after you do the first one, then suddenly other Rogues Gallery characters come in, and they kind of take over, and then Batman takes a backseat sort of character-wise, or emotionally.”

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Last year’s The Batman followed the point of view of Bruce Wayne nearly the entire way through, and we only saw the Riddler from the eyes of Batman, except for a few brief glimpses at the beginning and end. Since Reeves’ wanted to focus on the detective side of Batman, it makes sense that audiences got to solve the mystery at the same time Batman does instead of being spoon-fed clues from a different perspective.

Who Will Be the Villain in The Batman 2?

     Warner Bros. Pictures

Audiences got a peek at a deleted scene of Barry Keoghan’s take on the Joker in a deleted scene of The Batman, but there’s no confirmation as to what Batman villain(s) will appear in the sequel. Batman has one of, if not the most iconic rogues galleries of all time, and we’ll undoubtedly get another spellbinding take on at least one of them come 2025. Bruce Wayne will still be the focus, unlike some previous Batman films.

The Warner Bros. Batman saga (which began with Batman in 1989 and ended with Batman & Robin in 1997 started off with a relatively simple conflict between Michael Keaton’s Batman and Jack Nicholson’s Joker, but ended with a staggering amount of characters, with Batman joining up with Robin and Batwoman to take down three villains: Poison Ivy, Mister Freeze, and Bane.

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight gave the Joker considerable screen time, while Harvey Dent’s story on how he came to be Two-Face took up a large chunk of the runtime as well. While we still got to see a good helping of Batman’s detective work, gadgets, and fighting style, the villains were arguably the center of the story.

The Batman 2 does not yet have an official title, although it is slated for a 2025 release date. Robert Pattinson returns as the titular character, while Matt Reeves will again direct the film and co-write the script with Mattson Tomlin.
