Buffy the Vampire Slayer stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy, a vampire slayer who protects the world with the help of her friends Xander (Nicholas Brendon) and Willow (Alyson Hannigan), and her watcher, Giles (Anthony Stewart Head). The show perfectly mixed action and drama with teenage problems and humor, and while the show had many dramatic and emotional episodes across seven seasons, it also had some hilarious ones. Though every episode had lots of one-liners and fast-paced banter, the humor really stood out and was elevated in some, bringing major laughs to the series. Here are the funniest episodes of the show, ranked.
8 Lover’s Walk
20th Television
This episode sees the return of season two villain, Spike (James Marsters), who, according to Collider, was so popular and beloved that he broke past his planned one-season villain arc to become a series regular. In this episode, he comes back to Sunnydale after Drusilla has left him. After his villainous air, it’s refreshing to see him down in the dumps and drinking hot chocolate with Joyce. He’s even desperate enough to join Buffy and Angel, his former enemies, in a fight. Spike drives the episode, and he’s funny and just purely entertaining through the whole thing.
7 Him
This episode has one of the sillier plots in the series, as RJ, a popular boy who goes to school with Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg), wears a jacket that makes every woman around him fall in love with him, including Buffy, Anya (Emma Caulfield), and even Willow, who’s a lesbian. Those under the spell will do anything for his affection, with Buffy preparing to kill the principal who disciplined RJ, and Anya robbing a bank to prove her love. Yes, it’s nonsensical, but it makes for a truly hilarious episode that also surprises with an emotional finale moment between Buffy and Dawn.
6 Hush
“Hush” is one of the show’s greatest and most essential episodes. When the creepy Gentlemen invade Sunnydale, they take everyone’s voices, resulting in an episode that’s almost completely silent. Despite this, the episode still manages to bring great humor, with the highlight being the projector presentation Giles sets up. He puts the slides backwards, and his drawings are hilarious, even if Buffy objects to how he drew her. It’s a great moment, and a bit of light in such a dark, scary episode.

5 Storyteller
In this episode, Andrew (Tom Lenk), a villain-turned-hostage-turned-reluctant-ally, narrates the experiences going on at Buffy’s house, as she and the potential slayers prepare for battle. He makes for a great and fun narrator, and fills his documentary with model-worthy shots of Buffy pouring cereal and exaggerated pronunciations of the word ‘vampire.’ Its humor also stands out amid the show’s bleak final season, bringing some light-hearted absurdity when it was sorely needed.
4 Pangs
One of the show’s holiday-centric episodes, this one focuses on Thanksgiving, with Buffy trying to put together a dinner for the group. It tries to address the dark side of the holiday, and falls short, but it does make for a hilarious and entertaining episode. Xander gets sick with syphilis, which the episode manages to make funny. Spike turns up at Giles’ for protection, and finds himself tied to a chair, while Buffy’s attempts to stop their attacker result in her creating a bear. Wired considers it one of TV’s best Thanksgiving episodes, and this chaotic, dysfunctional hour is one of the show’s funniest as well.
3 Something Blue
This episode is one of the biggest times Willow’s magic goes wrong. After casting a spell to make herself get over her ex-boyfriend, she finds things that she says are coming true, with hilarious consequences. Xander, who often calls himself a demon magnet for how he attracts danger, literally becomes one. But the funniest part of the episode is Buffy and Spike, who are still enemies, deciding to marry each other. Watching them be the typical sickeningly adorable couple is one of the funniest moments of the whole show.

2 Band Candy
“Band Candy” centers around enchanted chocolate bars. When the adults of Sunnydale eat the candy, they suddenly become irresponsible teenagers. It’s a fun way to flip the situation and force Buffy and her friends to fulfill the responsible adult roles, while also bringing sheer delight in watching the show’s adult characters act like wild teenagers. From strict Principal Snyder making fun of Buffy’s driving skills to Giles reverting to his teen punk days and hooking up with Joyce, the episode is funny all around.
1 Tabula Rasa
Another episode involving magic gone wrong, this one sees the whole main cast lose their memories after Willow casts a spell to make her girlfriend Tara (Amber Benson) forget that she’s abusing magic. What follows is pure comedy gold, as the group is trapped inside the Magic Box hiding from vampires. Spike assumes Giles is his father and immediately hates him, while Anya assumes she’s engaged to Giles instead of Xander and bickers with him. Seeing the characters act so unlike themselves is hysterical and just downright fun. It’s the funniest episode of the show, and one of the best examples of the common temporary-memory-loss trope.
