Sony’s upcoming action extravaganza, Bullet Train, will introduce Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt as a master assassin on a mission. But, according to director David Leitch, Pitt’s skilled killer will be quite different from the likes of John Wick as you can clearly tell from this latest image…
Named Ladybug, Leitch revealed to Empire Magazine that his latest hitman creation will be going through something of an “existential crisis” while trying to both complete his mysterious mission and survive on a train full of fellow assassins.
While John Wick also harbors conflicted feelings towards his murderous past, based on the recent trailer and Leitch’s explanation, it looks and sounds like Ladybug’s crisis will be a little goofier. Continuing, David Leitch revealed that Brad Pitt’s assassin is far from the only element of Bullet Train that will differ from audience expectations.
“[Ladybug is] someone who’s pondering their place in the world. He’s having an existential crisis as all of these horrific things are happening around them. It makes him really relatable.”

Of course, one factor that Bullet Train aims to deliver on is the action. In keeping with the comedic fun, Leitch and his crew have taken inspiration from the perfect source: the movies of Jackie Chan. “[There’s] a little bit of physical comedy,“ the filmmaker explained. “The fights are designed to enhance the characters. We’re here to have fun in this super-contained space.”
“You hear the title Bullet Train and you think, ‘Hard-boiled action.’ But really it’s a deliriously fun, heightened, comedic action thriller.”
Bullet Train Has Amassed a Stellar Cast for This Action-Comedy-Thriller Combination
Sony Pictures Releasing
Based on the popular manga “Maria Beetle” by Kotaro Isaka, the plot of Bullet Train is the kind of thing that action dreams are made of. The movie follows five assassins who find themselves on a Japanese bullet train, who slowly come to realize that their individual assignments are all interconnected.
Of course, this realization comes amid a hail of bullets and other assorted action set pieces which, considering they have emerged from the mind of the director behind John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, and Nobody, are surely guaranteed to light up the silver screen like never before.
Brad Pitt headlines a stellar ensemble cast of eclectic, diverse assassins – all with connected yet conflicting objectives – set against the backdrop of a non-stop ride through modern-day Japan. Alongside Pitt, Bullet Train stars Joey King (The Kissing Booth) as Prince, Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The King’s Man, Tenet) as Tangerine, Brian Tyree Henry (Eternals) as Lemon, and Zazie Beetz (Joker) as Hornet, as well as Andrew Koji (Warrior) as Yuichi Kimura, Masi Oka (Heroes), Michael Shannon (Knives Out) as Jay Wang, Logan Lerman (Hunters), Hiroyuki Sanada (Mortal Kombat) as Takeshi and Sandra Bullock (The Lost City) as Maria Beetle.
Additionally, Bad Bunny, Karen Fukuhara, Masi Oka, Pasha D. Lychnikoff, and Miraj Grbić complete the supporting cast.
Following several release date delays, Bullet Train is now scheduled to be released in the United States on July 29, 2022, by Sony Pictures Releasing.
