Guess what pitches? Bumper is in Berlin and will be staying for another season! Peacock as well as the Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin star Adam Devine officially made the announcement earlier this month that the Pitch Perfect television spin-off has been renewed for a second season.
The first season made its debut back in November, and according to NBCU, the series scored the biggest comedy premiere in Peacock history, as it was watched by more accounts in its launch weekend than any other Peacock original comedy to date. It’s no surprise the series was renewed quickly for a second season. Susan Rovner, chairman of entertainment content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, commented to Variety about the renewal.
Adam Devine’s character, Bumper, is first introduced in the movie that the series is based on, Pitch Perfect, which was first released in 2012 to commercial success. The sleeper hit led to two more sequels and subsequently added the spin-off Bumper in Berlin. The film as well as the series is executive produced by Elizabeth Banks and Max Handleman who additionally commented about the renewal. “We are thrilled that audiences continue to enjoy the Pitch Perfect universe with Bumper in Berlin on Peacock. We look forward to even more hilarity and relentless mouth music in Season 2.” Bumper in Berlin is created by Megan Amram, who is also the producer and executive producer of the Peacock series.
With the excitement of Bumper in Berlin being renewed by the cast and crew as well as fans alike, here is what we expect from season two.
Where We Left Off
Peacock
Season 1 of Bumper in Berlin takes place roughly five years after Pitch Perfect 3. It follows Bumper (Adam Devine) as he attempts to revive his singing career. When one of his songs becomes popular in Germany, he is recruited by Pieter (Flula Borg), a former rival turned music manager and member of the acapella group Das Sound Machine, which disbanded due to Pieter’s lipsynch scandal, to move to Berlin and begin a career there. When he arrives in Berlin, Bumper meets Pieter’s assistant Heidi (Sarah Hyland), who also happens to be a secret singer-songwriter. Bumper quickly realizes that the reason he became viral in Germany is not because of his singing but because he accidentally flashed the camera. Pieter and Heidi however insist that Bumper remains in Berlin to work on his singing career since his passion is performing.
With encouragement from Pieter and Heidi, Bumper decides to stay in Berlin with the goal of performing at German Unity Day, the country’s biggest festival with another well-known rival singer, Gisela (Jameela Jamil), promising to perform an original song. With the help of Pieter’s music producer sister, Thea (Lera Abova), also known as DJ Das Boot, Bumper attempts to revive his singing career in Berlin. After feeling discouraged when a judge from Unity Day decides Bumper isn’t fit to represent Germany, then Pieter drops him as his manager, and he is hospitalized from intoxication. When he wakes up and reunites with Pieter and Heidi, Bumper has written a new song that he performs on a rooftop and one of the judges hears, changing his mind about Bumper performing at Unity Day alongside Gisela.
How Will Bumper Maintain His German Citizenship?
NBCUniversal
A significant factor we hope to see in Bumper in Berlin is that all the main characters return. Throughout season one, Bumper and Heidi had chemistry with each other. While the season focused on Bumper performing on Unity Day, he also faced the obstacle of being deported back to the United States right before his performance at Unity Day.
After being denied a visa extension his only option was to get married to stay in the country and Thea agrees. After successfully performing at Unity Day with Bumper having Heidi join him, the episode ends with Bumper realizing a scam marriage isn’t as simple as saying “I do.” He also learns Heidi was scouted after her performance to move back to the United States, with a decision not finalized, leaving viewers with a season-ending cliffhanger.
After Bumper gets married to Thea for citizenship, there are requirements to follow such as living together and spending more time with her. How will that go for Bumper, will this new citizenship help his singing career grow after the success of Unity day? Will Bumper have the desire to move back to the United States?
However, his heart is also set on Heidi, who may or may not leave Berlin. While Heidi does have this amazing opportunity, there’s a chance she can still stay and work on her career in Berlin with Pieter also representing her, giving Pieter a chance to grow his brand and reputation back.
We also expect to hear more original songs. The duet that Heidi and Bumper sang throughout the season was just the start. Which one will be next?
Bumper in Berlin hopefully will return later this year. All episodes of season one are streaming now on Peacock.
