After SNL took to Twitter to ask who fans would like to see host a night on the show, a resounding plea for comedy icon Carol Burnett became so overwhelming that her name had been trending on Twitter, sending people into a panic that she had died. Several users breathed a sigh of relief, including this relieved person:
Another tweeted, with over 41,000 likes:
“Carol Burnett was trending and y’all scared the hell outta me. They just want her to host SNL. How in the world has this comedic genius not been given this platform.”
SNL is gearing up for its 48th season minus former key cast members Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, Kate McKinnon, and Kyle Mooney, so landing the legendary Burnett would be a major coup, plus it would also be historic. Betty White, who was 88 the last time she took the SNL stage in 2010, holds the record as the oldest person to host. If Burnett, 89, did host the show, she’d set the record for SNL’s oldest host. Even comedian Patton Oswalt tweeted at the NBC show to endorse the beloved actress-comedian.
“Carol Burnett is 89 years old and has never hosted SNL. NBC end this madness now."

Other celebrities were also suggested, including Only Murders in the Building stars Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez, along with Taylor Swift, Daniel Radcliffe, Harrison Ford, Keke Palmer, and Dolly Parton. Law & Order actor Chris Meloni, who is all for the job replied, “Yes” to a tweet that mentioned him as a possibility.
“Guys, Carol Burnett. Come ON. Please?”
Leslie Jordan also campaigned for the role on Instagram.
Before Saturday Night Live, There Was The Carol Burnett Show
Best known for her groundbreaking comedy variety show The Carol Burnett Show , which ran from 1967 to 1978, Burnett had to fight to get the show made and once recalled a conversation she had with an executive who allegedly told her:
The Tony, Grammy, seven-time Golden Globe and six-time Emmy winner proved him wrong. Remarkably, she once confessed to considering ending her show,
“I’m not doing anything on Saturday night.”
“You know, Carol, variety is Sid Caesar, it’s Jackie Gleason, it’s Dean Martin. It’s a man’s game.”
The popular star has a few projects in the works, including Apple TV+’s upcoming Mrs. American Pie comedy series, starring alongside SNL alum Kristen Wiig.
“The only time I’d embraced the idea of stopping [The Carol Burnett Show] was during our fifth season. Our writers weren’t coming up with sketches that Harvey Korman and I found challenging to do, and we both felt we were starting to outgrow the show’s material. We went through a lot of writers that fifth year, but we never got the combination that we wanted. So, I really thought about quitting."
