Carol Burnett, a Hollywood institution, will be joining an already impressive cast of the Apple TV+ comedy series Mrs. American Pie, according to Variety. The 10-episode sitcom also stars SNL alum Kristen Wiig, Allison Janney (Mom), Leslie Bibb, Josh Lucas, and Ricky Martin. The 89-year-old will star as Norma, the grande dame of Palm Beach high society’s bourgeoisie club. Best known for hosting the variety sketch series The Carol Burnett Show on CBS from 1967 to 1978, Burnett is a six-time Emmy winner overall, with her show having won 25 Emmy Awards throughout its run. Her most recent win was for best guest actress in a comedy series for her work as Theresa Stemple on Mad About You.

Beloved for her comedic genius, the celebrated performer turned heads when she convincingly played an evil role in a Season 10 episode of Law and Order: SVU. A remarkable feat since this is so out of her wheelhouse. In an episode titled “Ballerina,” Burnette took on the role of Birdie Sulloway, a Norma Desmon-esque black widow who killed her husband.

Mrs. American Pie follows Maxine Simmons’s (Wiig) attempt to secure her seat at America’s most exclusive table: Palm Beach high society in the early 1970s. As Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots, Mrs. American Pie asks the same questions that still baffle us today, “Who gets a seat at the table? How do you get a seat at the table? What will you sacrifice to get there?”
The project was initially developed by Laura Dern (Jurassic Park) and her producing partner Jayme Lemons under their Jaywalker Pictures banner. Dern is also said to be eyeing a role in the series. The actress wrote on Instagram:
Award-winning actress Allison Janney will be playing the part of Evelyn, another high society member. In 2017, Burnett was set to star in an ABC comedy titled Household Name, but the pilot was not picked up. Mrs. American Pie will mark Burnett’s first regular series role on television since her show ended 44 years ago.
