The official trailer has been released for Cars on the Road. Serving as a follow-up series to the Cars films, Cars on the Road brings back Lightning McQueen and Mater with Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy respectively reprising the voice roles. This will certainly be a must-watch series for Cars fans, and to get your sneak peek at the show, you can watch the brand new trailer below.
“The series is a romp across the country with Lightning McQueen and Mater,” director Steve Purcell says of Cars on the Road. “Like any real road trip, every day is a new mini-adventure with unexpected twists and turns.”
The show serves as a spinoff to the Cars movies. It picks up with Lightning McQueen teaming back up with Mater to embark on a cross-country road trip to meet Mater’s sister. Marc Sondheimer produced the series with the series directors including Purcell, Bobby Podesta, and Brian Fee. Jake Monaco provided the score. Bonnie Hunt, Cheech Marin, and Lloyd Sherr are also part of the voice cast.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Cars on the Road, which will consist of nine episodes, is premiering on Sept. 8, 2022. That date is not a coincidence as that just so happens to be Disney+ Day, a special day when the streaming platform rolls out tons of new, exclusive content for subscribers. Also on that day, a new live-action Pinocchio movie will be premiered, and more content is expected to be announced getting closer to September. This comes ahead of the D23 Expo which will bring out even more big news and surprises for Disney+ subscribers and Disney fans.
Lightning McQueen and Mater Return
Pixar
There have been three Cars movies featured in the franchise so far, having been released in 2006, 2011, and 2017. Lightning McQueen and Mater have also been featured in a variety of short films set in the Cars universe such as Mater’s Tall Tales and Tales from Radiator Springs. Meanwhile, the 2013 film Planes also serves as a spinoff to Cars that focuses on speaking airplanes; that film was given a sequel of its own, Planes: Fire and Rescue, in 2014.
Whether there’s a fourth movie in the Cars series remains to be seen, but that might depend upon the success of this upcoming Disney+ series. If fans embrace the show and viewership is high on the streaming platform, it could convince the Disney brass that people are ready for Cars 4 to speed its way into theaters next. Owen Wilson has previously said that if Cars 4 gets made he wants to see it presented as more of a thriller.
“Well, I kind of trust Pixar to kind of come up with the stories because they have such a great track record with doing these movies that work for kids and also that grown-ups and parents find entertaining,” the actor told Cinema Blend. “I would imagine that if they do do another one, it’ll be something pretty cool. But yeah maybe like Lightning McQueen in sort of like a thriller. Maybe that could be something.”
Cars on the Road is set to start streaming on Disney+ on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022.
