The new Peacock docuseries Casey Anthony: Where The Truth Lies features Casey Anthony speaking up about what she believes happened to her two-year-old daughter Caylee. For background information, the toddler Caylee Anthony was discovered dead in 2008 after she had been missing for over a month. Casey did not report Caylee missing for the first 31 days until her mother Cindy Anthony questioned her about where Caylee was. Together they called 911 and informed the authorities.

However, Casey spun a story full of lies and contradictions, leading them to believe that she was responsible for the child’s disappearance. She was arrested as the primary suspect after Caylee’s body was discovered, and her death was ruled a homicide. She was then charged with murder and spent the next 3 years behind bars until her trial concluded. The jury ruled that she was not guilty of killing her daughter.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

At the time, the Casey Anthony case was one of the most widely followed since O.J. Simpson and became the first to attract a large social media following, with most people believing that she was guilty of murdering her daughter. When the verdict was reached there was a public outcry of rage. Since being released Casey disappeared from public view and refused to do any interview or make a public statement. To protect her, one of the members of her defense team took her in until she could get back on her feet. But now, she is finally ready to tell her story and the question on everyone’s mind is, is Casey Anthony telling the truth this time?

What You Need to Know

It has been ten years since Casey was found not guilty, and with this documentary, she has finally decided to come forward about what happened from her perspective. Casey offers much-needed insight into what happened on the last day that she saw Caylee alive and why she didn’t report her daughter missing and appeared to carry on as normal.

The investigators believed that the young mother simply wanted to party and live her life like a normal 20-something. Her actions certainly seemed to support this theory, as she continued to be social, go to work like normal, and even got a new tattoo during the month that Caylee was missing. Yet, everyone that knew Casey reported that she was a doting mother and couldn’t believe that she would ever hurt Caylee.

So what exactly made Casey behave this way? According to Casey herself, her father George Anthony was the last one to have Caylee, and although Casey had not seen her daughter for a month, he continued to assure her that Caylee was alright. And she believed him or rather was in denial that something bad had happened to her daughter.

Casey held out hope that George would return Caylee to her. The docuseries poses some challenging questions that make us really take a look at the flaws in this case and how Casey was perhaps wrongly perceived and George was overlooked as a serious suspect in the investigation. George himself lied and presented contradictions that were never challenged throughout the case and in the public eye. And it seems that no one took the sexual abuse allegations that Casey made against George seriously, except perhaps the jury.

Is it Worth the Watch?

Many have criticized the documentary for giving Casey Anthony a platform to continue to lie. With that being said, the docuseries sheds some light on Casey’s background and why she behaved the way she did. Although many will go into it believing she is guilty, very few things in life are truly black and white, and with this documentary we get to see, perhaps not a sociopath who is thriving in the spotlight, but a grieving mother who is coming to terms with her trauma and what most likely happened to her daughter. After going through intensive therapy and dissecting what happened in her past, Casey explains how she was abused by her father from a young age and then later by her brother. She tells how she ended up becoming pregnant and how she feared leaving her daughter alone with George.

The documentary is well worth the watch as it brings to light some dark truths about George and what possibly happened in this case. Although it seems we may never know for sure what happened to Caylee, we can say for certain that the facts of this case were not so compelling, but circumstantial at best. And the investigators relied heavily on hearsay from George who reported much of this so-called evidence that led Casey to be convicted.

The prosecutor also depended on George’s testimony during the trial when they were seeking the death penalty for Casey. This is perhaps the biggest question the docuseries poses, if George believed Caylee’s death was an accident as he claimed, why did he want the death penalty for his daughter? Of course, many will wonder if Casey is telling the truth this time and our recommendation is that you watch the documentary for yourself and form your own conclusion.
