Millions of fans were impressed with Kylie Jenner’s Halloween costume. On Instagram, the reality TV star posted several images of herself made up to look like Elvira, the iconic horror hostess played for decades by Cassandra Peterson. Each of the images garnered millions of likes on the social media platform, leaving Jenner’s fans stunned by the look.
In one post, Jenner writes, “MISTRESS OF THE DARK” in the caption. She dubs herself as “kyvira” in another. A separate post declares that “Kylie takes over Halloween,” while the final costume post gives a nod to the actual horror hostess with a simple caption that reads, “ELVIRA.” While Peterson is present on Instagram, however, she was not tagged in any of the posts.

For her part, Cassandra Peterson has reacted to the costume in a chat with TMZ. She says she was surprised and flattered by Jenner’s costume choice. Still, while grateful, Peterson suggests it would’ve been even more wonderful if Jenner had tagged her in any of the posts she shared with her 372 million followers.
“I didn’t get a heads up that Kylie was doing the costume, but she did the costume justice and it was very flattering,” the real Elvira said. “It would have been even more flattering if she tagged me.”

There Is Only One True Elvira
The costumes worn by others might be flattering, but Peterson knows that horror fans will never accept someone else as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. She recently spoke about the idea of seeing the iconic character recast with a new actress. The horror icon referred to the reality show The Search for the Next Elvira, which ended with an excellent impersonator getting crowned as the winner, but no matter how good she was, horror fans wouldn’t accept anyone other than Peterson.
“[Fans] didn’t buy it, they wanted Elvira,” Peterson told Variety. “If I did a biopic or, say, a Broadway production. I think somebody else could definitely play me. But I don’t think that they would permanently become Elvira. Unfortunately, I’d love to have somebody do that, but I don’t think it’ll work.”
Meanwhile, Peterson still maintains a presence in the horror world. She has a role in The Munsters, the new movie from Rob Zombie that recently premiered on Netflix. She also appeared as a special guest on The Last Drive-In: Joe Bob’s Haunted Halloween Hangout with Joe Bob Briggs, a special streaming event to celebrate the spooky holiday on Shudder.
