We Were The Lucky Ones is an upcoming limited series coming to Hulu. Based on Georgia Hunter’s New York Times Bestseller of the same name, the show is inspired by the true story of a Jewish family separated at the start of World War II but are determined to survive and reunite. The cast includes Joey King, Logan Lerman, Robin Weigert, and Lior Ashkenazi in starring roles.
The series wouldn’t be the first time King has worked with Hulu. Previously she starred in the true crime drama The Act, in a role that earned her an Emmy nomination. She also recently appeared in the Hulu original movie The Princess as the unnamed title character. Besides that, one of King’s most recent appearances was in Bullet Train, in which Lerman also appeared in.

Lerman is known for starring in the Percy Jackson films as the eponymous demigod. While neither film was a big hit with critics or audiences, it did provide Lerman with his big break. He then appeared in The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Indignation. On television, he also appeared in Prime Videos Hunters, a series that’s also all about Nazis and the Holocaust.
Weigert is best known for her roles in Big Little Lies, Sons of Anarchy, and Deadwood. Like King, she’s also worked with Hulu in the past. She appeared in Castle Rock, the streaming site’s original series based on the work of Stephen King. Another television credit of hers is AMC’s Dietland. She also recently appeared in Paramount’s Smile.
Ashkenazi starred in Israel’s original erosion of In Treatment, which was later adapted into an HBO show starring Uzo Aduba and Gabriel Byrne. The HBO shows that Ashkenazi himself appeared in include Our Boys and Valley of Tears. Currently, he can also be seen in Netflix’s Hit & Run alongside Lior Raz and Sanaa Lathan.

We Were The Lucky Ones will be directed by Thomas Kail (Fosse/Verdon). Kail will also executive produce alongside Jennifer Todd, who will be doing so on behalf of Old 320 Sycamore. Another executive producer is Erica Lipez (Julia, The Morning Show), who’ll also serve as the series showrunner. Other executive producers on the project will be Adam Milch and Hunter herself.
“I’ll never forget the day, at 15 years old, I learned that I came from a family of Holocaust survivors. It was a discovery that changed my life, inspiring a decade-long journey to unearth and record my family’s story,” said Hunter in a statement.
“When We Were the Lucky Ones landed in my dear friend Tommy Kail’s hands, I knew it had found its home. I couldn’t be more excited to partner with him, with our incredible showrunner, Erica Lipez, and with the amazing teams at Old 320, 20th and Hulu as we bring the story of my ancestors — and through it, the story of the Holocaust — to the screen.”
“Georgia and I have been friends for 25 years, and I am deeply proud to be part of the team working to share her family’s remarkable story. Erica and I did a play together 10 years ago, and I knew this project had to be our second collaboration. Georgia’s love for her family bursts off the page, and her vivid writing puts you right next to them at every moment. We’ll aim to honor these efforts on screen,” said Kail.
