Cate Blanchett has earned her fourth Golden Globe. The renowned actress joins Ingrid Bergman, Jane Fonda, and Meryl Streep as a three-time Best Actress Golden Globe recipient– her previous wins came for her work on Elizabeth and Blue Jasmine. Blanchett’s award-winning performance as fictional acclaimed orchestra conductor Lydia Tár in TÁR has been consistently praised, with speculation that Blanchett will also take home the Oscar, which would mark her third Best Actress Academy Award win.
In Todd Field’s psychological drama, Tár’s life begins to unravel following a traumatic incident, and she is plagued by nightmares, distant screams, and physical discomfort. The film has two other nominations tonight: Best Motion Picture-Drama and Best Screenplay - Motion Picture (Todd Field). Blanchett may reprise the role in Field’s upcoming short film The Fundraiser.

Blanchett is largely considered one of the greatest living actors. The Australian actress rose to international stardom for her portrayal of Elizabeth I in 1998’s Elizabeth (which earned her a Golden Globe Award and Academy Award nomination). In addition, she has gained critical praise and accolades for her roles in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, Notes on a Scandal, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and Carol.
The Worthy Nominees
Universal Pictures
While Blanchett’s win tonight was widely anticipated by critics, with some calling her performance as the orchestra conductor the best of her entire career, her fellow nominees’ efforts must also be praised.
Academy Award winner Olivia Colman, who began her career working in comedy, was nominated for her role as Hilary Small in Sam Mendes’ Empire of Light. While the film failed to impress critics, Coleman stood out as its bright light.
Viola Davis earned a nomination for her outstanding performance in The Woman King. Davis stars in the empowering historical film as General Nanisca, the leader of an all-female tribe of warriors living in West Africa in the 1800s. The film also stars Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega.
Ana de Armas, who was praised for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe by award recipient Colin Farrell earlier this evening, was nominated for Blonde. The film, based on a fictional book written by Joyce Carol Oates, has been one of the most polarizing films of 2022, with some labeling the film exploitative. However, while reviews have been mixed, praise for de Armas has remained consistent.
Michelle Williams earned a nomination for her part in Steven Spielberg’s memoir The Fabelmans and was considered a top contender for tonight’s award alongside Blanchett. Spielberg praised Williams’ portrayal of his mother, Mitzi, saying that both she and Paul Dano’s performances were so impressive that he could see his parents “come back to life again.”
